The experiment was done in Jadavpur University low turbulence subsonic closed circuit wind tunnel at different Reynolds number. The results from the experiment indicated that the addition of different add-on parts like front end spoiler and rear end spoiler to a basic car model reduces the lift coefficient to a considerable amount while the drag coefficient is reduced by a small amount. It was concluded that the addition of these add-on parts like rear-end spoiler etc increases the aerodynamic stability of a basic car model and hence they can be used in real life which will be an added advantage.

Higher capacities of power plants together with increased awareness on environmental consideratio... more Higher capacities of power plants together with increased awareness on environmental considerations have led to taller height of stacks. It is seen that strong wind can result in falling of stacks. So, aerodynamic consideration of stacks is very important in order to save the falling of stacks. One stack is not enough in industries and power sectors and two or three stacks are required for proper operation of the unit. It is very important to arrange the stacks in proper way to resist their downfall. The present experimental study concentrates on the mutual effect of three nearby stacks on each other at three different arrangements, viz. linear, side-by-side and triangular. The experiments find out the directions of resultant forces acting on the stacks in different configurations so that proper arrangement of supports can be made with respect to the wind directionality obtained from local meteorological data. One can also easily ascertain which stack is more vulnerable to wind in c...

The study of aerodynamic design of high-speed cars is mainly based on the wind-tunnel experiments... more The study of aerodynamic design of high-speed cars is mainly based on the wind-tunnel experiments and computational methods till date. In this particular study three car models of 10,20,30 pitch angles and 50,60,70 yaw angles are employed, and by wind-tunnel experiments we obtain pressure distributions over them. Now the correlations between drag-coefficient, lift-coefficient, pitch-angle and yaw-angle with Reynolds number are obtained by regression analysis of experimental data using MATLAB software. After plotting graphs it can be concluded that for minimum aerodynamic drag the optimized value of pitch and yaw angle should be 30 and 50. This type of study is expected to give a fair idea of aerodynamic angle design of high-speed cars.

The extent of wake region behind the spheres is qualitatively analysed by plotting velocity profiles at various distances away from the spheres. The whole experiment is carried out for various Reynolds numbers and different sphere diameters placed at various distances away from the nozzle mouth from where the jet is originating. The curves clearly depict the velocity defect created due to the presence of sphere. They also point out the gradually spreading as well as weakening nature of the wake region formed behind the sphere.

The criterion for human comfort at the worst condition at the top floor of the building is being considered and a limiting value of height of a building for a given cross section is predicted. Numerical integrations are carried out as and when required. The results show severeness of across wind oscillations in comparison to along wind oscillation. The comfort criterion is combined with across wind oscillation results to determine the maximum allowable height of a building for a given square cross-section. Keywords—Tall Building, Along-wind Response, Across-wind Response, Human Comfort.

Study of pressure distribution around buildings of different shapes based on the flow of air past... more Study of pressure distribution around buildings of different shapes based on the flow of air past various sharp-edged bluff bodies in a wind tunnel proves to be very important and useful in modern township planning, in the fields of Building Aerodynamics and other related areas. The buildings can easily be considered as sharp-edged bluff bodies of similar geometrical shapes and the pressure variation for flow past these objects can be determined experimentally in a low turbulence subsonic wind tunnel. This paper concentrates on the variation of pressure distributions past cubic and rectangular bluff bodies having various degrees of immersion within the boundary layer. A comparison between two-dimensional flow past rectangular body and three-dimensional flow past cubic body is included also. When an obstruction like a square cylinder is placed vertically in front of the cubic and rectangular bodies, a distinct change in pressure drop across them is observed as the obstruction is moved away from them. Experiments are carried out for a wide range of Reynolds numbers of wind flow within the test section of Jadavpur University subsonic low-turbulence closed circuit wind tunnel.
