The airline industry requires a more effective solution to improve the utilization and efficiency of their maintenance planning and maintenance engineering personnel so that aircraft maintenance turnaround time can be reduced to the optimal level, as it is a significant factor contributing to improving aircraft serviceability and availability for more revenue flights and generate more business. This exploratory study evaluated the significance of maintenance planning within the airline industry. It aimed to find a solution to reduce the time spent in maintenance management in the turnaround process. It also attempted to discover opportunities for airlines to follow a proactive approach in identifying problems early, thus improving overall aircraft efficiency and reducing lost time.
An exploratory study on the significance and challenges of aircraft base maintenance engineering in the aviation industry

The aviation industry reached such a safety level by implementing continuous innovation and improvement in flying technologies embedded during aircraft production. Along with production, the aircraft manufacturer's team also establishes aircraft maintenance requirements to keep the aircraft airworthy during its life span. Soon after the aircraft's delivery to its owner or operator worldwide, the owners'/operators' responsibility is to maintain the aircraft and ensure airworthiness by performing the maintenance work at predefined intervals. Such maintenance activities are defined in two categories and performed by aircraft engineers under the Part-145 framework and aircraft maintenance organizational setup. The first category is line maintenance, which is comparatively light regarding the nature of work, and the second is base maintenance, which takes all the major work needed on the aircraft. This research paper will discuss the significance and challenges in aircraft base maintenance engineering within the aviation industry.

Considering its widespread and multidimensional usage, aviation industry is still considered as a very risky business, which restrict new entrants to enter the market. This is not because of monopolized industry, but it is mainly due to several risk associated with this business, which are not limited to geopolitical, but also several other factors. A recent example can be considered from the COVID19 pandemic, when the whole world was on pause, and it made irreparable dents on aviation industry. Therefore, considering importance of aviation industry and associated risk, it is very important to review all possibilities to improve productivity of aircraft maintenance organization, which is not only beneficial for business owner but also for the customers by offering variety of services. This objective can only be achieved by a detailed qualitative analysis about the factors influencing aircraft maintenance organization’s workflow.
