Malnutrition is one of the major cause of morbidity and mortality in under five children in developing countries like Ethiopia. Malnutrition has been a rampant problem in Ethiopia for many years. Despite the various efforts, malnutrition among children is remaining as a major public health problem in Ethiopia. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess nutritional status of under five children and to find out the factors associated with childhood malnutrition in Chuko town. Method: A community based cross sectional study was conducted to assess nutritional status and associated factors among under five children in Chuko town from June 8-July22, 2016. Systematic random sampling was used and a sample size of 327 was taken. Data on important information about nutritional assessment of under-five children's was collected using structured questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. The collected data was daily checked for completeness, consistency and analyzed using SPSS computer software. Appropriate statistical tests were used and the association between variables was interpreted accordingly. Result: The prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting was 13.2%, 22.7% and 10.1% respectively. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression showed that a child's frequency of feeding per day (AOR= 4.809, 95%CI=1.613, 14.339) and maternal educational level (AOR= 7.019, 95% CI= 17.49, 28.167) were associated with malnutrition. Conclusion: Malnutrition is a major problem in the study community and it is associated with various independent variables. Highest educational level completed by the mother had significant inverse relationship with a child being malnourished. In addition, household monthly income and frequency of feeding per day are important determinants of a child's nutritional status. Recommendation: our study recommends that mothers engagement to formal education be encouraged and mothers should be given education about about frequency of feeding their child per day.
