This approach may be relevant for monuments that have not been preserved to date (or are poorly preserved) due to the influence of anthropogenic and natural factors. This is especially relevant for seismic zones and zones of military operations. In some cases (for example, in the case of the Byzantine fortress Gaspra-Isar (XII-XIII centuries, Crimea) - the monuments may have been destroyed during large construction projects. The research is based on the reconstruction of the landscape of the Genoese fortress on the Panea rock (XV century, Crimea) based on the materials of the works of the South Coast detachment of the Department of Ancient and Medieval Archaeology of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences Institute of Archaeology in 1966-1968. These materials are stored in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archaeology of Crimea RAS. The study uses a technique that can provide a very accurate reconstruction of the landscape on the basis of topographic maps and photographic materials. The methodology can be applied to the reconstruction of now lost archaeological monuments.

50 years ago J. Shepard, based on the analysis of the ‘Saga of Edward the Confessor’ and the ‘Universal Chronicle of Anonymus of Laon’, as well as on a number of indirect sources, suggested the possibility of Anglo-Saxon emigration in the second half of the XI century to the Northern Black Sea region.
Some arguments of the hypothesis do not stand up to modern criticism - the main part of the article is devoted to this. Nevertheless, some conclusions of J. Shepard are worthy of attention, and the discussion in English Byzantinism should be taken into account by Crimean researchers when analysing the historiography, especially against the background of the limited number of written sources on this region in the XI-XIII centuries.

Despite this, they remain poorly studied in comparison with similar walls of medieval cities of the peninsula. The history of their study begins with short reports of travellers who visited the Crimean mountains in the XVIII-XIX centuries. In the first half of the 20th century, significant archaeological excavations were carried out on the plateau, which largely shaped our understanding of these fortifications. After the World War II and up to the XXI century the defences were not investigated, but they continued to figure in the scientific discussions of Crimean medieval researchers. Since 2003, permanent expeditionary work on the medieval city was resumed, and its fortifications have once again become the subject of discussion and research.

The unique complex of constructions combining fortress walls and cave rooms is an example of early Byzantine provincial fortification modified by the expansion of the city during the High Middle Ages.
The author again raises the question of the functional purpose of some structures at the late stage of the city's existence.

It defended the harbour of the port town of Sembas and was destroyed by the Turks in 1475.
The article reviews the history of its research and presents different views on its reconstruction. The text is accompanied by a comparative 3D model.
