We report spacecraft imaging and spectral data collected during and after retrieval of a sample from Bennu’s surface. The sampling event mobilized rocks and dust into a debris plume, excavating a 9-meter-long elliptical crater. This exposed material is darker, spectrally redder, and more abundant in fine particulates than the original surface. The bulk density of the displaced subsurface material was 500 to 700 kilograms per cubic meter, which is about half that of the whole asteroid. Particulates that landed on instrument optics spectrally resemble aqueously altered carbonaceous meteorites. The spacecraft stored 250 ± 101 grams of material, which will be delivered to Earth in 2023.

We report the modeling results and show evidence of phase reddening. We also present our bolometric Bond albedo map and discuss the variations we see across the surface of Bennu. Finally, we provide a comparison with other asteroids and comets.

A multiwavelength regionally dependent photometric analysis of Pluto's anti-Charon-facing hemisph... more A multiwavelength regionally dependent photometric analysis of Pluto's anti-Charon-facing hemisphere using images collected by New Horizons' Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) reveals large variations in the absolute value and spectral slope of the single-scattering albedo. Four regions of interest are analyzed: the dark equatorial belt, Pluto's north pole, nitrogen-rich regions, and the mid-latitude terrains. Regions dominated by volatile ices such as Lowell Regio and Sputnik Planitia present single-scattering albedos of ∼0.98 at 492 nm, almost neutral across MVIC's visible wavelength range (400-910 nm), indicating limited contributions from tholin materials. Pluto's dark equatorial regions, informally named Cthulhu and Krun Maculae, have single-scattering albedos of ∼0.16 at 492 nm and are the reddest regions. Applying the Hapke radiative transfer model to combined MVIC and Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array (LEISA) spectra (400-2500 nm) of Cthulhu Macula and Lowell Regio successfully reproduces the spectral properties of these two regions of dramatically disparate coloration, composition, and morphology. Since this model uses only a single coloring agent, very similar to the Titan-like tholin of Khare et al., to account for all of Pluto's colors, this result supports the Grundy et al. conclusion that Pluto's coloration is the result of photochemical products mostly produced in the atmosphere. Although cosmic rays and extreme ultraviolet photons reach Pluto's surface where they can drive chemical processing, observations of diverse surface colors do not require different chemical products produced in different environments. We report a correction scaling factor in the LEISA radiometric calibration of 0.74±0.05.

Since 1996, we have conducted detailed studies of the abundances of parent volatiles in 8 Oort Cl... more Since 1996, we have conducted detailed studies of the abundances of parent volatiles in 8 Oort Cloud comets using modern long-slit echelle spectrometers having sensitivity in the 1 - 5 mu m spectral region. These instruments (CSHELL at the NASA-IRTF, and NIRSPEC at Keck 2) have sufficiently high spectral resolution ( nu / Delta nu ~ 2 x 104 ) to resolve individual cometary emission lines. Their small pixel sizes provide the high angular resolution necessary for detailed study of the spatial distribution of emissions in the coma. Here we inter-compare our results for the chemically-linked molecules carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (H2CO), and methyl alcohol (CH3OH) among our sample of comets. Such a study can provide clues as to the processing history of the ice. Measuring the relative abundances of these molecules can provide a test of the efficiency of conversion of CO, for example through hydrogen addition on icy grain mantles or by radiation processing in the dense cloud core. ...

Research paper thumbnail of Remote sensing of land-surface temperature from HIRS/MSU data

A relaxation algorithm which permits meteorological parameters to be obtained from satellite data... more A relaxation algorithm which permits meteorological parameters to be obtained from satellite data, without a priori assumptions about the properties of the other unknowns in the field of view, was developed. Atmospheric temperature profiles, atmospheric humidity, cloud cover, cloud top height, cloud top temperature, sea-surface temperature, land-surface temperature, snow cover, and ice cover are derived. Simultaneous determination of atmospheric and surface thermal structure and the cloud distribution provides information on heat sources and sinks, storage rates, and transport phenomena in the atmosphere. Such information is critical in determining the driving mechanisms for motions in the atmosphere and oceans and in improving numerical weather prediction.
