We analyzed the morphological, phenotypic, and molecular characteristics of seven cases, and in addition reviewed 17 cases from literature. Sequence analysis of KIT and PDGFRA genes was possible for six cases. For the GIST cases with bone metastasis, the most common primaries were small intestine (29%), stomach (25%), and rectum (21%). Sites of bone metastases were vertebrae (11), pelvis (8), femur (8), ribs (6), humerus (5), skull (3), scapula (1), and mandible (1). The size ranged from 1.5 to 13 cm (median, 3.8 cm). Bone metastases without involvement of any other organ were seen in 17% of the cases and were solitary in 14 (58%). Adjacent soft tissue involvement was present in nearly half of the patients. Bone metastasis was either manifest at the time of diagnosis (28%) or occurred after a mean period of 4.7 years (3 months-20 years...

The aim of this study was to investigate the biostimulation effect of laser irradiation on healing of cutaneous skin wounds, in vivo, by means of bioimpedance measurements and histological examinations. Cutaneous skin wounds on rats were subjected to 635 nm diode laser irradiations at two energy densities of 1 and 3 J/cm 2 separately. Changes in the electrical properties of the wound sites were examined with multi-frequency electrical impedance measurements performed on the 3rd, 7th, 10th, and 14th days following the wounding. Tissue samples were both morphologically and histologically examined to determine the relationship between electrical properties and structure of tissues during healing. Laser irradiations of both energy densities stimulated the wound healing process. In particular, laser irradiation of lower energy density had more evidence especially for the first days of healing process. On the 7th day of healing, 3 J/cm 2 laser-irradiated tissues had significantly smaller wound areas compared to non-irradiated wounds (p < 0.05). The electrical impedance results supported the idea of laser biostimulation on healing of cutaneous skin wounds. Thus, bioimpedance measurements may be considered as a non-invasive supplementary method for following the healing process of laser-irradiated tissues.

Each of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 0.250 kg and 12 weeks old received weekly injections of sodium iodoacetate (1 mg/0.1 ml NaCl) in the right knees for 8 weeks to induce an experimental model of OA. According to autopsy findings, among the main causes of death in newborns were infection, hyaline membrane disease, congenital anomalies, perinatal hypoxia and immaturity, and in the fetal period, perinatal hypoxia, asphyxia and congenital anomalies. In these cases, when pathologic and clinical findings were examined, it was observed that in 204 out of 301 newborn cases (67.8%) the clinical findings were well correlated with the autopsy findings; in 97 (32.2%) of the remaining cases the main disease and primary causes of death could not be determined through clinical findings; in 69 (23%) cases, in addition to the clinical diagnosis on autopsy, minor defects were determined on autopsy which were not directly related to death. When clinical and autopsy...

These benign tumors are rarely seen in the adolescent population: there are only a few cases that have been reported so far in this age group. In this case report, we present a giant uterine leiomyoma that mimicked an ovarian tumor in a 15-year-old girl.

It was possibly a congenital lesion and caused a slowly progressive nasal obstruction and anosmia. Tumor removal with transnasal endoscopic approach was applied and total removal of the mass was accomplished. It was found out to be the cementoossifying fibroma of the paranasal sinuses when the results of the pathological examinations were obtained.

Lymphangiosarcoma is an extremely rare but highly lethal complication of chronic lymphoedema. Our patient was treated by amputation and died 6 months later. Treatment of post-mastectomy lymphangiosarcoma is still unsatisfactory. Early recognition and radical ablative surgery seem to provide best chance for survival.

They commonly metastasize within the abdominal cavity, particularly to the liver. Less commonly, metastases can be found in the bone. Case presentation: We here present a case of metastasis to the scapula in a 54-year-old Caucasian male patient with an advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumor, which was subsequently successfully treated with resection and sunitinib. Conclusion: The present study is, to the best of our knowledge, the second to describe scapular metastasis of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Our patient was treated by scapulectomy. The overwhelming majority of scapular tumors are metastases that arise from soft tissue, hepatocellular and thyroid tumors. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor metastasis occurs rarely. Scapular surgery can successfully provide local control of the disease. After the surgery, patients should continue with medical treatment.

To compare the effect of cisplatin (CPL) to that of the drug combination bleomycin, cyclophosphamide, and dactinomycin (BCD), patients were randomized to receive either drug(s) within a course of sequential multidrug CT including doxorubicin and high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX). Definite surgery was done 10-18 weeks after the start of CT. Patients were randomized a second time to receive or not to receive fibroblast interferon in addition to CT beginning at week 16. At a median observation time of 19.5 months (range, 4-34 months), 116 (73%) of 158 patients were continuously disease-free (CDF). After exclusion of 42 patients because of some deviation in history and/or management, 86 (74%) of 116 patients actually were CDF with a 30-month calculated CDF-rate of 68%. There was no difference in CDF rates in the patients receiving BCD versus CPL or receiving interferon versus no...

In 1994, the eects of cocaine in pregnant rats had been reported by this group: a signi®cant decrease in the number of live births, mean birth weight and mean placental weight. In addition, histopathologic examinations revealed severe in¯ammation and degenerative vascular changes in the uterus and placenta. Severe histopathologic changes resembling NEC such as focal necrosis, necrobiosis, and hemorrhagic in¯ammatory changes in the gastrointestinal tract of the embryos were also reported. The aim of the second part of this study was to assess the hemodynamic eects of cocaine HCl in pregnant rats and the results of perfusion studies in the uterus, placenta, and fetuses to determine a relation between the dose of drug, hemodynamic changes, and degree of histopathologic ®ndings. Forty-seven Wistar albino rats and 91 rat fetuses were studied: group A (pregnant rats), 16 rats and 91 rat fetuses, group B (nonpregnant rats), 31 rats. Each group was divided into subgroups of cocaine-abused and non-cocaine-abused rats. In each group 2±3 mCi technetium Tc-99m methoxyisobutyl-isonitryl (Sesta MIBI) was injected into the tail vein. Radioactivity counts per g tissue (cps/g) in the uterus, placenta, and fetus were assessed by gamma counter. Cocaine 75 mg/kg per day severely decreased the perfusion of the uterus, placenta, and fetuses. These impairments were statistically signi®cant. In lower doses (30±50 mg/kg per day) no statistically signi®cant changes were observed in the perfusion of the uterus and placenta, but a signi®cant decrease in fetal perfusion was seen. In group B, no signi®cant changes in the perfusion of the uterus due to cocaine were seen. Thus, maternal cocaine abuse results in a reduction in perfusion of the uterus, placenta, and fetus. There was a dose-dependent correlation between the perfusion changes and the development of NEC-like histopathologic changes: the higher the cocaine dose received by the mother, the higher the level of placental and fetal injury. We suggest that perinatal cocaine exposure should be considered a high risk for development of NEC in rat fetuses and embryos. For this reason, infants with a history of possible maternal cocaine abuse or positive urinary cocaine metabolites have to be followed very carefully for NEC.
