Air temperature varied from 40 to 70 °C with an air velocity of 1 m/s. Drying rate curves were determined and quality of dried green olives was evaluated by instrumental analysis (bulk density, particle density, porosity, shrinkage, moisture con- tent, water

In this study, the uptake of phenol and nickel(II) ions, both singly and in combination, by dried aerobic activated sludge was studied in a batch system. The effects of initial pH and single- and dual-component concentrations on the equilibrium uptakes were investigated. The optimum initial biosorption pH was determined as 4.5 for nickel(II) ions and as 1.0 for phenol. Multi-component biosorption studies were performed at these two initial pH values. It was observed that the equilibrium uptakes of phenol and nickel(II) ions were changed due to the initial biosorption pH and the presence of other components.

Research paper thumbnail of Detection of virulence factors of Escherichia coli from children by multiplex polymerase chain reaction

International Journal of Clinical Practice, 2006

Ninety-four E. coli strains were found to carry at least one virulence factor. Therefore, 58.38% of total population was positive for one virulence gene at least. Percentage of genes within the total population for pap, sfa, afaI, hly, cnf I and aer was found as 22.98, 6.21, 9.94, 1.24, 9.94 and 39.75, respectively. Our analysis showed that sfa-pap (p < 0.001); pap-aer, afaI-aer and cnf I-pap (P < 0.05) and hly-sfa (p < 0.01) significantly co-occurred in their respective samples. In the light of these findings, we suggest an important role of pap causing UTI.

Research paper thumbnail of Donor–acceptor–donor type conjugated polymers for electrochromic applications: benzimidazole as the acceptor unit

Pendant group at 2-C position of the imidazole ring was functionalized with phenyl (P1), EDOT (P2) and ferrocene (P3) in order to observe substituent effect on electrochemical and electrochromic properties of corresponding polymers. Spectroelectrochemical results showed that different pendant groups resulted in polymers with slightly different optical band gaps (1.75, 1.69 and 1.77 eV respectively) and different number of achievable colored states. Optoelectronic performance and comparison of results with other well known π-accepting benzazole bearing DAD type polymers were reported in detail.

We present a girl, age 3 years, the fourth child of healthy, unrelated parents. She was born after a normal pregnancy and delivery. Minor facial dysmorphism and poor sucking reflex were noted at birth. She presented with prolonged jaundice with increased serum aminotransferases and hyperbilirubinemia. During the first year of life psychomotor retardation with severe hypotonia, impaired hearing, and abnormal retinal pigmentation were noticed. At age 15 months, the diagnosis of generalized peroxisomal dysfunction was made. Her serum showed increased concentrations of very long-chain fatty acids and phytanic acid. In fibroblasts she had an abnormal profile for very long-chain fatty acids, deficient plasmalogen levels, and decreased activity of acyl-CoA:dihydroxyacetone phosphate acyltransferase. With vitamin supplementation and dietary therapy, clinical status improved and hearing and visual impairment stopped during 1 year of follow-up.

Research paper thumbnail of Electroretinographic findings in Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy and correlation with genotype

Fifteen deletion positive patients with DMD, two deletion positive patients with BMD and six DMD carriers in two families having a positive disease history were evaluated with DNA analysis, ophthalmologic and ERG findings. The mean age of the deletion positive D/BMD patients was 11.1 +/- 3.7 (range: 7-20). No abnormality was detected in the ophthalmic examination of the patients. In three out of 17 patients with D/BMD, ERG was normal whereas in 14 patients electronegative ERG was recorded in scotopic conditions. Mutational alterations observed in these three cases with normal ERG were located exceptionally at 5&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; hot spot; not like the others within central region. In all DMD carriers ERG findings were recorded as normal. ERG findings in D/BMD patients may show some correlations with molecular analysis, whereas it is not useful in DMD carriers.
