With these onerous tasks, there has been a high and increasing cases of violent and non-violent crimes in Rivers State. This paper therefore, examines the work environment factors that serves as challenges to job performance by the Rivers State Command of the Nigeria police. The choice of the state was necessitated by the high and increasing rate of criminal activities and the escalating spates of violence vis-à-vis the inability of the police to prove their mettle in stemming the high rate of criminal activities in the state. The objectives of the study are (a) examine the link between police work environment and their capacity to perform optimally their law enforcement function and (b) examine the work environment of the police visa-vis its implication for work related stress and police work performance. This situation, no doubt, has often resulted in changes in other social systems because of the centrality of the economy to other systems in society. Economic recession as an inevitable consequence of the global capitalist system, and Nigeria’s experience of her economic recession have left so much to be desired in the country. This study examines the nexus between economic recession and family instability and their effect on antisocial behaviour in Nigeria. The methods employed in this study are literature review and content analysis of some theories (-social structure, social control, neo-marxist and age-graded theories-) that are linked to economic recession, family instability and social vices. The focus of this paper was on spiritual intelligence as an aspect of crime control: evidence fro... more The focus of this paper was on spiritual intelligence as an aspect of crime control: evidence from some selected law enforcement agents. The researchers adopted the socio-metry method of qualitative research. The study utilized both the primary and secondary method of data collection. Key informants interviews (KII) were conducted with some of the law enforcement agents identified to be spiritually intelligent so as to get the much needed information from them on spiritual intelligence and how it has helped them in carrying out their crime control responsibility. The findings of the paper showed that crime rate has become a huge social problem and government efforts to avert the problems have proven abortive as some of the criminals adopt spiritual means in perpetrating some of these crimes. Recent researches on gang violence focused on youth gang violence. This study, therefore, examines juvenile gang violence as an emerging form of violence in many rural areas of Rivers State. Insight into this emerging reality was gained through unstructured interview, personal observation and review of related works on gang violence. The survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study covered five purposively selected communities that have witnessed increasing rate of cult-related violence in the Rivers State. A sample of 100 respondents were purposively selected and interviewed. The study revealed that, although youth gang violence such as cult and armed robbery have been on the increase, juvenile gangs violence further exacerbates the violent situation in the study area through inter and intra gang rivalries/wars and other violent social vices. In Nigeria today, the National Conference is ongoing to fashion a more robust way to reposition t... more In Nigeria today, the National Conference is ongoing to fashion a more robust way to reposition the country's federalism and strengthen its democracy. As such, one of the major issues being discussed at the conference borders on security; stressing the need for devolution of the highly centralized police power to reposition the institution to adequately maintain law and order and secure the lives and property of people. This, obviously, is as a result of the upsurge in both violent and non-violent crimes across the country following the inability of the police to prove its worth. The inability of the police to efficiently perform its constitutional duties, among others factors, is now blamed on the over-centralization of the force in Nigeria. This situation has brought about the increasing demand for the decentralization of the force, while many are stressing on the need to maintain the status-quo. This paper has weighed both sides of the coin and argued that one of the ways the Nigerian police would be able to function efficiently, not through any form of reform, but through the establishment of state police. Therefore, this paper advocate for the establishment of state policing as one of the lasting measure to curbing the recurring crime problem in Nigeria.

Two null hypotheses were generated for the study. Survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was Rivers State, and it covered all youths who are out of drugs in the State. a sample of 300 respondents was selected for the study. The selection was done through the use of simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was content validated by professionals in the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Choba. Furthermore, the reliability value of 0.80 Correlation Co-efficient was obtained for the study. This paper explores the link between governance failure, violence and its implication for internal security in Rivers State. The level of violence in the state is high and increasing particularly since 1999 when the nation returned to civil rule. Violence such as inter and intra communal conflicts, cult violence, armed robbery, kidnapping, political violence among others, now writ large in the state. The study utilized the qualitative and content analysis. The paper reveals that the pervasive nature of violence with negative effect on the internal security is the fall out of the failure of the governance in the state.
