By cycling through provisional historical groupings of the disconnected term "sophists," we see how the waves have evolved to create sophistic impressions of the hermaphrodite. Next I demonstrate how the hermaphrodite is envisioned in post-Marxist conceptions of species-being, which postmodern critics contend have created a contradiction between desire and reason. Evidence for this involved with identity politics and subsequent alienation of the intellectual. Lastly, after Danilo Kis's novel Hourglass and is adduced as evidence for alienation of the intellectual, I conclude by assessing counter-arguments. 1. First and Second Sophistic Waves Gorgias of Leontini (5 th century BCE) is classified among the First Sophists. Scott Consigny understands Gorgias's rhetoric as being attached to community: "Gorgias ... sees [intellectuals] as being fashioned through participation in the institutions and customs of their community, and ... he construes the community as a contingent association of individuals held together by shared activities rather than by ethnicity or adherence to fixed moral principles." 1 The intellectual represents social interactions constituting him as an essence shaped by others, as a figure of the community. The postmodernist problem, you will remember, is how to represent malaise. Just to the extent that "traditional ceremonies" are "debased into mere occasions for public display," it seems, "passivity becomes a widespread social attitude." 1 (emphasis mine) Using the critical lens of Irving Howe, Herman explains that the difference between modernism and postmodernism is that the former attempts to explain the unexplainable nature of life's abstractions, while the latter abandons this search because the search for any type of origin is fruitless-that is, there is no basis for originality because of the constructed nature of truth. Herman contends that this is a paltry excuse for postmodernism to passively explain the world's problems off as mere spectacles. For Herman, the dilemma with postmodernism is that it seems to explain problems of representation as unsolvable and somehow forgettable.

Human Enhancement Technologies (HET) offer valuable assistance for individuals with disabilities.... more Human Enhancement Technologies (HET) offer valuable assistance for individuals with disabilities. Alongside these opportunities, it is important to consider the ethics that inevitably emerge. The field of disability studies recognizes that disability is a key aspect of human experience and that the study of disability has important political, social, and economic implications for society as a whole, including both disabled and nondisabled people. This chapter raises ethical questions about HET for disability through review of the literature surrounding this topic. To evaluate the ethical implications of regulating enhancement technologies for disability, medical and social models of disability are applied towards select cases. This chapter responds to the work of select disability scholars (see Dolmage; Kerschbaum & Price; Meloncon & Oswal; Vidali) by characterizing ethical perspectives from medical and social lenses. While a medical interpretation of disability offers a stark and impersonal approach, a social interpretation offers a detailed and individualistic one. The majority of scholarship noted here favors the social model. The framework presented herein seeks to abide by the social model of disability. Since HET have become an ethically contested field of discourse today, this chapter divides the literature into the following sections: 1) definitions, distinctions, and challenges of medical and social models of disability; 2) ambiguity, authenticity, and the ab/normality construct; 3) forced privacy and the privilege to hide; and 4) recent trends in regulation and the ethics of development.

Engaging with the critical race theory methodol- ogy of counterstory developed by Aja Martinez and the social justice heuris- tic developed by Rebecca Walton, Kristen R. Moore, and Natasha N. Jones, we use a framework of positionality, privilege, power, and professionalism to interrogate the politics of academic hiring. We use this framework to theorize from our personal stories and to consider how Othered job seek- ers interact with hiring bodies in ways that are deeply visceral and that are always implicated within institutionalized power relations. We then provide recommendations that will help hiring committees and faculty mentors move toward more equitable and inclusive academic hiring practices.

While self-help books generally do not fit into the capacity of information design, this text studies how self-consciousness is a fundamental factor in fulfilling one's overall satisfaction-ultimately leading to a healthier and productive lifestyle. By finding meaning behind our life experiences, Csikszentmihalyi argues that we can make a greater emotional impact on others and ourselves. Donald A. Norman and Patrick W. Jordan argue in a similar vein to Csikszentmihalyi and are discussed in this review. Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi's Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, a seminal text that first appeared in 1990, has made an important impact on evolutionary psychology. While Flow is not a technical manual, I argue that the exigency of its tie to information design lies behind the fact that the psychology of happiness needs to be covered in designing practical products. Where the text leans towards the concept of flow as something he describes as "joy, creativity, the process of total involvement" (p. xi), Donald A. Norman and Patrick W. Jordan agree that this core element to his study ties into the design of practical products that are meaningful.

The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore a sample of college writers’ with ADHD perceptions on difficulties with their writing, as well as to evaluate an intervention which utilized communication-based classroom scenarios. The research employed qualitative methods to investigate the phenomenon under study. Participants in the study consisted of a criterion-sampled group of 10 individuals from Clemson University aged 18 and over, had documented evidence of ADHD, and were previously and/or currently enrolled in a college writing course. Findings from this project inform higher educational practice across several disciplines.
