From the days of Kocher the surgical procedure has come a long way. Morbidity and Aesthetics are modern day issues . Methods This study was carried out in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati during period of two years from 2014 to 2016. Inclusion criteriaBenign and malignant thyroid swelling upto 6 cms in size irrespective of sex. Exclusion criteriaMalignant thyroid swelling with extracapsular involvement. All the patients underwent mini-incision thyroid surgery. Conclusion In this paper we have tried to evaluate the usefulness of an incision of 5cm to operate thyroid neoplasm in select patients of tumour size 6 cm or less in one of the diameter. We have described a single compartment surgery that...

In the present study, a total number of 73 patients were included to find out the various clinical and pathological manifestations of the oral cancer Methods :This study was carried out in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati during period of one year from 1 st July, 2015 to 30th June, 2016.In this series, oral cancer cases with lesions in lip, alveolus, and buccal mucosa, anterior two-third of tongue, retromolartrigone, hard palate and floor of mouth were included irrespective of age and sex.Proforma was filled. It includedpatients’s details, presenting complaints, history of present illness, history of past illness etc. Personal habits like smoking, betel quid chewing, tobacco use, alcohol intake were analysed in depth. Detailed examination was done on the primary lesion and nodal status. Biopsy was taken from the lesion and sent for histopathologic...

Meningioma is the most common nonglial intracranial neoplasm, arising from meningiocytes (arachnoid cap cells) of arachnoid granulation tissue. These neoplasms are most likely to be diagnosed in females, during the middle decades of life. They are rarely found in children. These tumors are rarely found extracranially. Primary extracranial meningiomas do not have connections to dura or any other intracranial structure, while secondary extracranial meningiomas have dural extension and/ or metastasis. Primary extracranial meningiomas (less than 1% of all meningiomas) frequently occur in head and neck region (2%). Males showing predominance . Most commonly found in sinonasal tract , temporal bone, ear and in the scalp. This paper presents a rare case of primary sinonasal meningioma in a 25 years old male patient presenting with nasal obstruction and proptosis of left eye. Treatment comprises of surgical excision with...

They are included in the group of mesodermal odontogenic tumors and commonly present as a progressively growing lesion that might attain enormous size with resultant deformity, if left untreated. We present a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma involving the lower right jaw in a 13 year old female patient. The clinical, radiographic, histologic features are discussed. The treatment comprised of surgical enucleation. The final diagnosis was made after histopathological examination.

This study is intended to analyze the clinical profile and outcomes of deep neck space infection ... more This study is intended to analyze the clinical profile and outcomes of deep neck space infection in diabetic patients in our tertiary care centre. A prospective study of 1 year duration from 30th September 2015 to 30th September 2016 at department of Otorhinolaryngology, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati. A total of 45 diabetic patients who presented with DNSI are included in this study. Their demographic profile, etiology, bacteriology, treatment, duration of hospital stay, complications and outcomes have been analyzed. 45 patients were recorded; 32 (71.11%) were men, and 13 (45%) were women, with a mean age of 63.27 ± 7.55 years. There were 30 patients (66.67%) who had associated systemic diseases apart from diabetes mellitus. The parapharyngeal space in 13 patients (28.89%) was the most commonly involved space. Odontogenic infections in 18 patients (40%) and upper airway infections 9 patients (20%) were the two most common causes. Klebsiella pneumonia in 29 patients (64.44%), was the commonest organism isolated through pus cultures. All the patients except one (97.78%) came with abscess and underwent surgical drainage. One patient (2.22%) with carbuncle underwent regular dressing. Six patients (13.33%) had major complications. Those patients with other underlying systemic diseases or complications tended to have a longer hospital stay and were older. No cases of death has been reported. (mortality rate, 0%). DNSI patients with diabetes have a more severe clinical course. They are likely to have complications more frequently and a longer duration of hospital stay. In clinical practices while dealing with these patients more vigilance is required. On admission empirical antibiotics should cover K. pneumonia. Early surgical drainage remains the main method of treatment. Primary prevention can be achieved by orodental hygiene, regular dental check ups and in this part of the country by avoidance of substance abuse like tobacco chewing.

It is a slow growing and benign tumour which can reach an enourmous size and may turn malignant if left untreated. Although uncommon, most cases of giant pleomorphic adenoma were reported before 1980’s, with few publications recently. This paper presents a rare case of giant pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland measuring 3.1 kg by weight in a 78 year old female with a history of 10 years. Pre operative assessment was done by thorough clinical examination, histological and radiological findings. Treatment comprises Total conservative parotidectomy by the Transcervical Transparotid approach with post operative excellent aesthetic and functional results.
