Once the house accommodates tourist activities as an additional function, many parts of the house are transformed. The transformation presents a conflict between economic gain and the preservation of Balinese traditions in the house. In order to illustrate this paradoxical phenomenon, this paper first shows how the traditional house has been reconfigured as a response to address the specific challenges of the tourist economy. Then, using architectural examination and interviews, the paper shows that the infiltration of the tourist activities has blurred the house’s configuration so that the transformed house is no longer able to express its original characteristics, hierarchy values and symbolic meaning.

This phenomenon is a paradox in the development of a cultural tourism area. Tourists expect a natural and authentic culture. On the other hand, the community hopes to participate actively in tourism activities and utilize their houses and village as economic resources. The participation of local people plays a vital role so that the success of developing a tourism destination depends on the level of the local communities' supports. However, people's participation in the tourism business has triggered local culture transformation since they have utilized their traditions, including their vernacular house and village, as tourist resources. To investigate this phenomenon, architectural examination and interviews are used as a method of investigation. This paper found that to sustain the tourism destination, it is significant t...

A cultural landscape, a configuration produced by human actions and cultural structures in a phys... more A cultural landscape, a configuration produced by human actions and cultural structures in a physical setting, has a significant role to play as a vital feature of cultural tourism in Bali. However, this configuration has become the most heavily commoditized elements of the development of tourism. Construction of tourist amenities has exploited the notion of a cultural landscape that has been integrated into cultural practices, the environment and agriculture. This development and planning are a paradoxical phenomenon and a challenge for people to retain the identity of their cultural landscape while also seeking economic benefits from tourism. The struggle between the protection of the identity of the cultural landscape translated and manifested in the context of agriculture and its transformation in the context of designing tourist facilities has shaped the fundamental argument for preservation. Since there are different cultural traditions and practices in many Balinese cultural ...

Although every kingdom has opportunities to demonstrate its authority through architecture and layout, architectural hierarchy is presented from the form of architectural productions, including the traditional gate called kori agung among palaces called puris, especially the architectural form in palaces of Gianyar. This phenomenon has risen to the questions on how far the authority power influences the architectural form. Are there any other elements that influence the architectural form design in Gianyar? Drawing from seventeenth- through twentieth-century photographs, correspondences and collected oral traditions, this paper explores the oral traditions and power relationships among the kingdoms that influence the layout and form of the palace’s architectural production called puri in Gianyar Bali. Regarding tourism facilities, most people at tourism areas extend their houses as a home stay, a restaurant, an art shop, salons, and other facilities. Without properly manage, that will have severe impacts upon local communities and environment. The housing extensions phenomena as tourism facilities and sustainable issue in tourism areas occur at some rural areas in the world including Indonesia and Bali, especially Ubud Village. These house extensions are often designed with adoption of tourism standard, for example, the people tend to adopt the new technology such as using air conditional to anticipate the increase of local temperature (as the effect of climate change). In order to overcome the ecological problem and energy, they use modern building material such as aluminum, plastic, asbestos, etc. That building are often designed by less taking local characteristic of tropical environment. Consequently, the cost was excessively high and the impact on the environment was negative. The objective of this study is to know how application of Balinese architecture in tourism facilities at Ubud Village. In order to achieve this objective, this research uses stratified random sample survey strategy, and case studies. The result of research shows that generally the tourism facilities at Ubud Village has been far away use Balinese architecture principle like ventilation, material, ornament landscape etc. On the other hand, many facilities use air conditioning and other equipments to find comfortable in the room. That is wasteful of energy and unfriendly to environment. The solutions suggested in this research are the use of sun shading to control of sunlight both vertical and horizontal shading to decrease use of air conditional; the arrangement of the buildings, the attention on environment , the use of material etc.

As a cultural phenomenon, the transformation involves an interrelated complexity of aspects in the houses. There is a need for a holistic approach to contextualize the complexity of the impact of tourism on the transformation. Unfortunately, an instrument to identify the textures of the transformation, as a fundamental phase to explore the complexity, is not yet available. The objective of this study is to develop an inclusive methodology based on criteria as the fundamental stage in the multiple holistic method developed. Using visual documentations of 749 traditional houses from four villages, the findings show that the transformation has been considered in various ways, both as the additive sum of the specific changes, and as a hierarchy of cultural traditions and activities. It was a process generally found to begin at the front part of the houses, followed by the backyard and pavilions, and in the fin...

Start from five star hotels until small lodgings built in each community residential unit. The strong custom and restrictions on tall buildings in Bali, making people look for various new alternatives to develop accommodation. The existence of local regulations that require the use of traditional Balinese ornamentation, requires accommodation owners to find adaptive accommodation development methods. However, with the development of the digital industry 4.0 specifically in contact with online advertising, there are no official rules in Bali that regulate it. This condition makes the demand for cheap accommodation in Bali seem unlimited. The promotion system no longer requires government legality. This phenomenon makes accommodations in remote places even can be accessed easily by all people in the world. The community then competes with each other to build cheap accommodations in their traditional homes. The government also cannot touch the spatial development caused by online media demand, due to the absence of regulations that limit it. This research tries to identify the bed bunk phenomenon that is built and operationalized through online promotion media, and has no legality. Data collection was carried out by direct observation of the object of study in Canggu village, district of North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali Province. The findings of this study indicate that, bed bunk was born in Bali due to the high demand for backpacker tourists which is sufficient with wifi, table and bed facilities. The high cost of land in Bali encourages local people to build accommodations in their residential units. The maximum utilization of the interior (construction of 6-8 beds in one room) is the most preferred choice. This condition is due to vertical building restrictions that cannot exceed 15m and economic factors (get maximum income on narrow land). This finding is expected to be used as an evaluation material for spatial improvement in Bali which has an impact on congestion throughout the tourist area due to uncontrolled accommodation development.
