The storybook used is a recommendation from the Japanese Board on Books for Young People and meets the standard of the quality book according to the award of Hans Christian Anderson. The author applied two approaches, namely metonymy from a cognitive linguistic perspective and metonymy from a social semiotic perspective. The social semiotic perspective was used to identify the character manifestation by applying theory from Painter et al. (2014) as the development of theory from Kress & van Leeuwen (2020). A cognitive linguistic perspective was used to analyze the relevance between the source domain and a target domain and to map the domain-internal nature of metonymic based on Forceville (2009); Ruiz de Mendoza & Diez Velasco (2003). The next analysis step was to process data, namely the amou...

The issue discussed in this research includes learning new vocabularies by Japanese language learners who are competent and the relevance of vocabulary-learning strategy by Oxford (1990) to foreign language learners' current condition. This research aims to elaborate on the relevant vocabulary-learning strategy for foreign learners of the Japanese language. The research methodology is qualitative, with semi-structured interviews by adopting the questionnaire by Saengpakdeejit (2014). The vocabulary-learning strategy is classified based on the taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategy by Oxford (1990), Schmitt (1997), and Churches (2009). The result shows that Japanese language learners who are competent apply the vocabulary learning strategy, as Oxford (1990) stated. The dominant strategy used by the participants is a cognitive strategy, which allows new vocabularies to be stored in the participant's memory. F...

In this research, the researcher investigated the function of particle no as modifier and nominalizer in Japanese language sentence. Referring to term used by Shibatani et al. (2017), particle no with such function is called juntai joushi no or nominalizing particle no. This research aims to grammatically elaborate the nominalization process in Japanese language sentence with marker of nominalizing particle no. Research methodology used was qualitative descriptive using data source in form of news published in NHK (2020). Data analysis was conducted using theory as stated by Morita (2013), Shibatani et al. (2017) and Shibatani & Chung (2018). Research shows the result that the nominalizing particle no serves as modifier when attached to noun or noun phrase and nominalizer when attached to verbal clause. Function of the nominalizing particle no as modifier provides additional m...

This can be seen through Japanese literary works, which are translated into other languages. Botchan is one of the best literary works from Natsume Soseki that was translated into several languages, including Indonesian language, with the title of the translation Botchan Si Anak Bengal by Jonjon Johana. This novel tells the story about the life of Botchan, a teacher, who faces several conflicts. In this novel, there are many cultural terms so that when they are translated, they would trigger some difficulties because some of the terms still do not have equivalences in target language. The material cultural terms include foods, clothes, houses and their parts, places, and means of transportation. They can be found in the words geisha, kimono, soba, and so on. This research analyzed the equivalence in the translation with the informan...

In this case, the researchers want to see the responses of the readers regarding occupation, marriage, and the lifestyle of Arafo women. With the reception theory by Hall, it could be seen whether the message from the author of the web manga about Arafo women can be fully understood or interpreted differently by the readers. It was intended to understand the meaning conveyed by the writer and illustrator in a Japanese children’s book entitled ‘Kuroino’ (Little Shadow). This research used the approaches for verbal text analysis by Halliday about Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and visual text analysis by Kress and van Leeuwen about Visual Grammar (VG). The research method was descriptive qualitative by explaining two data types: clauses in the Japanese language and images in the storybook. The data analysis of every aspect in the three metafunctions of language and the three metafunctions of images show the meaning that completes each other. In the analysis of ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning, and textual meaning, the writer narrates the friendship and adventure of ‘Kuroino’ (the Black) and Watashi (I). Meanwhile, in the analysis of representational...
