However, those classification methods either demand high computational costs or do not provide an accurate measure of confidence. Probabilistic neural networks (PNNs) overcome these limitations and have demonstrated their superiority among other algorithms. PNNs have been extensively applied for some prediction tasks, but they have not been well studied regarding the prediction of seismic facies volumes using seismic attributes. We have explored the capability of the PNN algorithm when classifying large- and small-scale seismic facies. In addition, we evaluate the impact of user-chosen parameters on the final classification volumes. After performing seven tests, each with a parameter variation, we assess the impact of the parameter change on the resultant classification volumes. We find that the processing task can have a significant impact on the ...

Sensors for monitoring electrical parameters over an entire electricity network infrastructure pl... more Sensors for monitoring electrical parameters over an entire electricity network infrastructure play a fundamental role in protecting smart grids and improving the network’s energy efficiency. When a short circuit takes place in a smart grid it has to be sensed as soon as possible to reduce its fault duration along the network and to reduce damage to the electricity infrastructure as well as personal injuries. Existing protection devices, which are used to sense the fault, range from classic analog electro-mechanics relays to modern intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). However, both types of devices have fixed adjustment settings (offline stage) and do not provide any coordination among them under real-time operation. In this paper, a new smart sensor is developed that offers the capability to update its adjustment settings during real-time operation, in coordination with the rest of the smart sensors spread over the network. The proposed sensor and the coordinated protection schem...

The research focuses in particular on the case of Colombia and on the region of Montes de Maria, located on Colombia’s Atlantic coast. The chapter initially discusses the patterns of conflict transformation in the South American region, and subsequently turns to an analysis of how peace has been contested at the local level in Colombia. Significantly, the Colombia case study has been selected because of two overriding factors. First, Colombia remains the only country in South America that is currently experiencing an armed conflict, suggesting that it represents, at best, a regional exception or, at worst, an aberration. While all other armed conflicts have come to a close and all authoritarian regimes have eventually undergone political transitions, Colombia is still experiencing widespread political violence wielded by diverse illegal armed groups. Second, Colombia represents the most pronounced case of local-level peacebuilding initiatives (LPBIs) being proven to have an important, albeit limited, impact upon the causes and consequences of armed conflict, in spite of the presence of conventional liberal peace politics. Consequently, Colombia speaks to, yet differs from, broader processes within the region, where civil society mobilizations were critical not only in shaping transition from authoritarian rule, such as in Chile and Argentina, but also where civil society actors assumed a formal role in peace negotiations, such as the case of Guatemala.

In some hospitals, logistic activities are planned based on the experience of people that are directly involved in them, which leads to question if this is or not, the best way to carry out the planning process. The mixed-integer linear programming model proposed in this paper, is a tool for finding new shift and routing designs for dirty linen (DL) collection in one of Bogotá's (Colombia) largest public hospitals, satisfying resources availability constraints and hygiene related conditions.

The problem is theoretically appealing because it is computationally difficult due to the huge number of possibilities, and the amount of rules that determine crew planning. This work proposes a methodology to determine the most efficient and least costly way to serve the flights in an airline schedule during a weekly planning horizon considering layovers and deadheads. The strategy is composed of three optimization models: a binary programming model, a model based on the set partitioning problem, and a third model based on the set covering problem, the two latter solved via column generation. Computational results for the three models are presented using test instances built from a mid-sized Colombian airline.
