The sample included 374 attendees at meetings sponsored by the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA). Content analysis revealed that the typical nephrology patient is elderly, has a chronic illness and negative affect, is not compliant, and is dependent on others. The typical nephrology nurse-patient interaction emphasizes teaching and support. The most common nursing activities are assessment, teaching, dialysis treatment, and psychological support.

The Roy model is reviewed, and examples from the assessment tool and intervention typology are presented. A case study illustrates application of the tool and typology to nephrology nursing. Comparison of the tool and typology with the ANNA Standards of Clinical Practice revealed that the Roy Adaptation Model includes additional important aspects of nephrology nursing practice.

The intervention was based on Watson’s (2008; 2012) theory of caring. A quasi-experimental design was used to compare perception of nurse caring by experimental group (n = 15) and usual care group (n = 14). Results showed no statistically significant difference between the groups on patient perceptions of nurse caring. Both groups were asked survey questions after evening care was given. Both groups responded similarly. Three themes relating to nurse caring emerged from the surveys: providing hygienic and comfort care, demonstrating nurse caring behaviors, and being relaxed and comforted. Lastly, patients in both groups reported a positive experience with their evening nursing care.

The original qualitative study was designed to elicit perceptions of clients with end-stage renal disease regarding why, how, and by whom the decision was made about the type of dialysis treatment modality (hemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) that the client would undergo. Secondary analysis of the original study results revealed that the factors that influenced the decision regarding the type of dialysis treatment modality encompassed the five Neuman systems model variable areas: physiologic, psychologic, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual.

Acaring-healing environment with nurse caring behaviors was designed according to Watson’s theory of human caring. Aposttest only design with comparison group was employed. The sacred space environment combined soft lighting, warmth, selected music, and an art mural in an OR. Data were collected on 50 patients in the comparison group and 50 patients in the experimental group using the Sacred Space Assessment Instrument. Results showed that a statistically significant difference existed when perception of sacred space and perception of nurse caring were compared by group. However, no statistically significant difference resulted on patient satisfaction by group.
