The inflammatory process results in systemic, ophthalmic, and neurological lesions. It is difficult to diagnose in older adults and may present as a medical emergency. Here, we report the case of an 83-year-old woman who presented with bitemporal headache, jaw claudication, glossodynia, failure to thrive, and amaurosis fugax. The findings supported the hypothesis of giant cell arteritis. Despite receiving treatment, the patient died of an acute myocardial infarction. Headache in older adults raises the possibility of giant cell arteritis, especially when combined with an ophthalmic emergency. Many symptoms indicate the condition, but the diagnosis may be challenging, especially for the generalist physician.

DESIGN: We completed a prospective, comparison cohort study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Ninety-four persons, 60 years or older, participated in the study. Participants resided in 4 not-for-profit LTCFs in 3 cities in the southern region of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. METHODS: Participants underwent complete skin examination and Braden Scale rating every 2 days for 3 months. When a PU was detected, a careful examination was done to assess its stage, location, and size. From this moment on, the patient was included in the incidence rate and was excluded from the study. RESULTS: The incidence rate of PUs was 39.4%; 37 (77.1%) developed a single ulcer. The most common locations were the malleolus (27.1%) and the ischium (25.0%). Stage I PU were most frequent (66.7%). Females (62.8%) and whites (68.19%) prevailed, with an average age of 79.06 Ϯ 9.6 years. Body mass index was 20.93 Ϯ 4.9, with a predominance of urinary diseases (58.5%) and use of neuroleptics/psychotropics (52.1%); 28.7% had had a previous ulcer. Gender and the occurrence of a previous ulcer were found to predict the development of PU, based on logistic regression analysis (r 2 ϭ 0.311). CONCLUSIONS: The overall incidence of PU was significant, but the incidence of stage II and higher PUs was less than 12% and no elders had stage III or IV ulcers. Factors associated with PU development include female gender, regular use of neuroleptic or psychotropic medications, and a history of pressure ulceration.

Objective: to describe the peristomal plate cut mold (PPCM) for simultaneous evaluation of new products for the treatment of dermatitis. Methods: experience report about creation of a cut model, with sufficient size and width to expose part of the skin with dermatitis, to apply another product. The trapezoidal cut, according to positions 3, 6, 9 or 12 hours, corresponding to one of the quadrants, it was performed on the plate of carboxymethylcellulose, pectin, and gelatine coupled to the stoma bag. The entire part of the plate adhered to the skin was adapted to the control product. In the photographic analysis, CorelDRAW 19.0 was used. The lesions were measured in pixels. Result: the cut did not interfere with the adhesion of two parts device board, it made possible the simultaneous application and testing of a new product and the comparison of the healing with the plate. Conclusion: the PP...

The SF-36 is a well-researched, reliable and valid broad-based, sophisticated instrument with population norms and normative data for a wide variety of medical conditions. The SF-36 assesses health-related quality of life in 8 areas: 1) limitations in physical activities because of health problems; 2) limitations in social activities because of physical or emotional problems; 3) limitations in usual role activities because of physical health problems; 4) bodily pain; 5) general mental health; 6) limitations in usual role activities because of emotional problems; 7) vitality (energy and fatigue); and 8) general health perceptions. The original version of SF-36 [Ware & Sherborne, 1992] was used in this study. This dataset contains the scores of eight SF-36 subscales above. Study Sample 227 participants in the study completed SF-36 instrument. Data Collection Method SF-36 questionnaire was self-administered in paper-and-pencil format on the arrival day at the clinic.
