In recent years, computer architects and operating system designers have witnessed an astonishing... more In recent years, computer architects and operating system designers have witnessed an astonishing growth in the use of virtual machines for WEB applications, grid computing, and resource scheduling, among other computer applications. The state-of-art in Virtualization Systems allows for applications running in virtual domains to transparently migrate between computer nodes, without disrupting the services which the applications run. Unfortunately, application's migration can only be successful if no time dependencies are observed, otherwise the computer nodes are required to be synchronized in time with each other so that the application will not crash. This dissertation introduces the Virtual Time Stamp Counter (vTSC), a new time counting solution to support migration of time-dependent applications on virtualized domains. This paper proposes and evaluates an efficient distributed video transcoding. Unlike known soluti... more This paper proposes and evaluates an efficient distributed video transcoding. Unlike known solutions that require modification of the encoder or restrict the performance of the solution, we present a optimized technique for video search, allowing the creation of independent segments that can be transcoded in parallel. Preliminary experiments demonstrate that the distributed transcoding in a cluster of 4 nodes runs 5.6 times faster in comparison with the same video transcoding running 48 threads on a dual quadcore node.

Energy-efficient computer systems are making increasing use of processors that have multiple core... more Energy-efficient computer systems are making increasing use of processors that have multiple core units, DVFS, and virtualization support. However, current system clocks have not been usually designed to cope with the capacity of such mechanisms to decelerate/accelerate the passage of time, which increases the time drifts in the system and produces two adverse side effects. First, a reduction in the precision of the system clocks, which makes it infeasible to run applications that are dependent on precise time measurements. Second, increasing the rate of system resynchronization with an external global clock, which adds more noise to the system and counteracts the attainment of a desirable energy efficiency.
