The objective of this study was to describe and compare the fecal bacterial microbiota of horses ... more The objective of this study was to describe and compare the fecal bacterial microbiota of horses with equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) and healthy horses using next-generation sequencing techniques. Fecal samples were collected from 15 client-owned horses previously diagnosed with ERU on complete ophthalmic examination. For each fecal sample obtained from a horse with ERU, a sample was collected from an environmentally matched healthy control with no evidence of ocular disease. The Illumina MiSeq sequencer was used for high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. The relative abundance of predominant taxa, and alpha and beta diversity indices were calculated and compared between groups. The phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, and Proteobacteria predominated in both ERU and control horses, accounting for greater than 60% of sequences. Sample storage conditions are an important factor in fecal microbiota analyses in general. The ob... more Sample storage conditions are an important factor in fecal microbiota analyses in general. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of sample storage at room temperature on the equine fecal microbiota composition. Fecal samples were collected from 11 healthy horses. Each sample was divided into 7 sealed aliquots. One aliquot was immediately frozen at −80 °C; the remaining aliquots were stored at room temperature (21 to 22 °C) with one transferred to the freezer at each of the following time points: 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The Illumina MiSeq sequencer was used for high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Fibrobacteraceae (Fibrobacter) and Ruminococcaceae (Ruminococcus) were enriched in samples from 0 h and 6 h, whereas taxa from the families Bacillaceae, Planococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Moraxellaceae were enriched in samples stored at room temperature for 24 h or greater. With a longer-term goal of addressing the comparative behavior of the aqueous halides F−, Cl−, Br... more With a longer-term goal of addressing the comparative behavior of the aqueous halides F−, Cl−, Br−, and I− on the basis of quasi-chemical theory (QCT), here we study structures and free energies of hydration clusters for those anions. We confirm that energetically optimal (H2O)nX clusters, with X = Cl−, Br−, and I−, exhibit surface hydration structures. Computed free energies, based on optimized surface hydration structures utilizing a harmonic approximation, typically (but not always) disagree with experimental free energies. To remedy the harmonic approximation, we utilize single-point electronic structure calculations on cluster geometries sampled from an AIMD (ab initio molecular dynamics) simulation stream. This rough-landscape procedure is broadly satisfactory and suggests unfavorable ligand crowding as the physical effect addressed. Sin embargo, respecto de este término, ha surgido un debate sobre la forma en la que debe computarse, razón por la que se hace necesario analizar las posiciones jurisprudenciales planteadas al interior de la Sección Cuarta, a través de la reconstrucción de la línea jurisprudencial de ambas tesis, mediante el análisis dinámico del precedente planteado por Diego López Medina en El Derecho de los Jueces. Several species of tropical frogs that breed in water habitats form explosive mating aggregations... more Several species of tropical frogs that breed in water habitats form explosive mating aggregations after heavy rains, particularly those from the families Hylidae and Bufonidae (Wells, 2007). During those mating events, unusual amplexus can take place, including multiple amplexus, amplexus between males, amplexus between alive males and dead females (necrogamy), interspecific amplexus, and even amplexus with inanimate objects (Mollov et al., 2010). Abnormal cases of amplexus have been mostly documented for anurans in temperate regions and little information is available for tropical species (Tovar-Rodríguez et al., 2009; Machado and Bernarde, 2011). Herein we document the first record of abnormal amplexus in Dendropsophus columbianus (Boettger, 1982). Boettger's Colombian Treefrog (D. columbianus) is a common species with a wide distribution in Central and Western Andes of Colombia, between 950 and 2300 m (Ruiz-Carranza et al., 1996). Usually, this species is found aggregated in permanent and temporary ponds where they breed (Bolívar y Renjifo, 2004), and show peaks of vocal activity during the night and isolated calls in the mornings (D.A. Gómez-Hoyos, pers. obs.). On October 30 th 2010, we heard a chorus of males with high vocal activity in the morning, which could be audible from approximately 300 m. These observations were recorded in the municipality of Circasia, Department of Quindío, at the Central Andes of Colombia (04º37'57.4''N; 075º38'24.8''W; 1710 m), in a temporary pond (approx. 200 m 2) located in livestock pastures. We walked around the pond for 30 minutes and males did not decrease the advertisement calls.
