High-quality optical fibers of multikilometer lengths were tested in high strength bending, and t... more High-quality optical fibers of multikilometer lengths were tested in high strength bending, and the fracture surfaces were examined by conventional fractographic techniques. It was found that mechanical failure occurred at stresses below the 200 ksi proof stress and that many of the failures were accompanied by damage to the buffer, presumably preceding the mechanical failure. Changes in both fiber fabrication and testing were introduced to correct the situation. These changes, which helped to increase the reliability of the optical fiber for missile payout applications, are discussed, and test results are presented.
