International teaching practicums help pre-service teachers (PSTs) advance professionally in teac... more International teaching practicums help pre-service teachers (PSTs) advance professionally in teaching and gain multicultural competence. This study aims at describing an investigation of challenges and problems faced by the pre-service teachers during their international teaching program in an Indonesian elementary school and how to cope with them revealed by the PSTs' voices. This qualitative case study started with conducting a survey questionnaire covering various aspects of results, challenges, and problems regarding the aspects of pedagogical, content knowledge, technology, and cultural gaps faced by 7 international pre-service teachers (PSTs) from the Netherlands. The survey results were then further examined through in-depth interviews with the PSTs and thematic analysis was conducted to examine the data. After the implementation of the 2013 national curriculum which excludes English from the primary ... more After the implementation of the 2013 national curriculum which excludes English from the primary school, many primary schools in Indonesia keep offering English to the students despite the uncertainty of the status of English for the primary school. However, the state of the practice of English currently in primary schools is barely unknown. This study is an attempt to portray the teachers that strive to teach English in the primary schools in one of the regencies that are still implementing English education. This survey study involved 44 randomly selected Primary English teachers (PETs) in the regency. The research instrument was a set of online (google format) and offline questionnaires. Results show that the majority of the teachers have English teaching qualification, however only very few ever attended pre-service or in-service training for teachers of young learners. It pictures the policy and practice of EYL in which English is adopted as either a first, second, or foreign language. The discussion on each country begins with a brief historical and political review that helped shape the country’s policy on foreign language education. It then moves to the status of English in the polity then to EYL policy and practice of each country and follows next the challenges each country experiences regarding EYL. This research is a type of research and development (Research and Development). The research subjects were 5th semester students who had taken the Listening for Academic Purposes and Speaking for Academic Purposes courses. The integration of learning material in the Listening for Academic Purposes (LAP) and Speaking for Academic Purposes (SAP) courses for PBI students in semester 4 is very necessary. The steps that have been carried out in this study have reached the stage of needs analysis and have succeeded in identifying several important things needed in developing teaching materials such as types of texts, activities needed and liked by students, types of media that can be used, reaction patterns and assessments. The learning material in the LAP course is prioritized on providing exposure to prepare students to be able to produce appropriate speeches and expressions in the SAP class.

A practicum, like any other educational practices, is supported by a set of an operating procedur... more A practicum, like any other educational practices, is supported by a set of an operating procedure or a guideline. The guideline may be in the form of a curriculum book, a syllabus, or a set of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). A curriculum or guidelines in education carry their philosophical foundations that serve as the driving forces of the educational practice. This article aims at revealing the philosophical foundations that embody English for Young Learners' practicum program through an inferential content analysis study. The data were in the form of phrases and sentences taken from the practicum operating procedures and other relevant documents. The results showed that the most mentioned aspect of the documents was the learners’ roles. This finding led to the discovery of the philosophical foundations of the practicum which were dominated by Progressivism and followed by Social Reconstruction, Existentialism, and Religious Humanism. In broader view, materials can be defined as anything which is used specifically with the intention of increasing pupil's knowledge and experience of the language. Therefore materials may include textbooks (coursebooks), workbooks, story books, videos, cassettes, pictures, brochures, menus, interactive CDs, or other real-life artifacts, (Moon, 2003: 86). In choosing and selecting materials for the teaching practices, we need to have several considerations like whether we have to create the materials ourselves, how we can select appropriate materials for our pupils, how we can adapt the materials in assisting our learners in learning, and what the benefits are of either adapting or creating our own learning materials. The article then aims at discussing fiiese considerations in choosing, selecting, or creating learning materials in the teaching ofEnglish for your learners. This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their supra... more This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their suprasegmental aspects found in their speech. Students were asked to read aloud a text entitled The Gorilla Joke from the © BBC British Council 2006. Students oral narrations were then analysed in terms of their intonation pattern and stress assignment in sentence level. A metrical analysis was also used to show how students produced their speech rhythm. The result of the analysis shows that given the same text to read students may produce various combination of intonation patterns. Students also misplaced stress within the syllables or assigned no stress at all. Based on the metrical phonology analysis, learners did not assign foot timely based on the timing units in connected speeches. The speech production is more like a broken speech. Students also neglected the morphophonemics rules in which they did not produce the appropriate allomorphs [t], [d], and [id] in the past participle words....

Indeed, conducting an empirical study of the learning needs of SMK students, particularly those with art concentration is necessarily important. Regarding this fact, this piece of writing tries to figure out the learning needs of SMK students with art concentration by means of identifying the voices of those conducting the teaching and learning process of English as a foreign language for these particular learners. This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their supra... more This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their suprasegmental aspects found in their speech. Students were asked to read aloud a text entitled The Gorilla Joke from the © BBC British Council 2006. Students oral narrations were then analysed in terms of their intonation pattern and stress assignment in sentence level. A metrical analysis was also used to show how students produced their speech rhythm. The result of the analysis shows that given the same text to read students may produce various combination of intonation patterns. Students also misplaced stress within the syllables or assigned no stress at all. Based on the metrical phonology analysis, learners did not assign foot timely based on the timing units in connected speeches. The speech production is more like a broken speech. Students also neglected the morphophonemics rules in which they did not produce the appropriate allomorphs [t], [d], and [id] in the past participle words....
