Research paper thumbnail of A new method of tracheoesophageal fistula treatment: Using an atrial septal defect occluder device for closure—The first Turkish experience

In the literature, we have encountered only 9 case reports in this regard. We shared a successfully closed tracheoesophageal fistula case with this technique. Case A tracheoesophageal fistula in a 47-year-old male patient was successfully closed with an atrial septal defect occluder device. The patient died on the 42nd day after the procedure with no atrial septal defect occluder device-related problems. Conclusion Using of atrial septal defect occluder device may be an appropriate option for tracheoesophageal fistula treatment. It can be said that the procedure is successful when the device is completely covered. Even so, there is a need for multi-centered, randomized, controlled studies of large series about the subject.

Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation Of Quality Of Life In Patients With Pleurodesis

Currently, it is aimed not only to eliminate the diseases but also to increase the quality of life of individuals. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of pleurodesis on the quality of life of patients with MPE. Methods: Twenty-four patients who underwent pleurodesis were prospectively included in the study. Talc pleurodesis was performed to the patients by tube thoracostomy. The 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) quality of life scale was applied to the patients during their hospitalization and on day 11 of discharge. Data were analyzed statistically. Results: Female patients comprised 70.8% (n=17) of the cases. The mean age of the patients was 54.29±13.84 years. Fifty percent (n=12) of the cases were applied pleurodesis due to pleura metastasis of breast cancer, whereas 29.2% (n=7) due to lung cancer and the rest (20.8%, n=5) due to ovarian carcinomas, respectively. As a result of the comparison of the responses of the patients to the SF-36 quality of life results before and after the procedure, pleurodesis provided significantly positive results on all parameters (p<0.05) except for only mental health (p=0.20). Conclusion: The main reason for impairment in mental health is that patients have advanced cancers. We believe that the explanation of that is if pleurodesis does not change the stage of cancer. However, the presence of significant contribution of the treatment on all of the other parameters is an indication of how important pleurodesis is. Our study also provided hints that young patients can benefit more from pleurodesis. We think that the patient's cachexia status due to primary disease has no effect on the quality of life that pleurodesis provided. We believe that pleurodesis should be performed in all patients with MPE, if possible.

Material and Method: The patient cohort is a multicenter, retrospective analysis of 268 patient that underwent surgery for NSCLC adenocarcinoma. Preoperative PET-CT results for mediastinal lymph node staging was pathologically confirmed on tissue specimens obtained at anatomical resection. Statistical evaluation of PET CT, radiological and pathological outcomes were performed on all subgroups. Results: The low FDG affinity in the lepidic pattern was statistically significant in the study (p

In this study, we compare the tube thoracostomy procedures performed early on in the pandemic and those performed later after steps were taken in accordance with the new recommendations. Material and Method: It is a retrospective and single-center study. COVID-19 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax with indications for tube thoracostomy presented to our emergency department between March 10, 2020, and March 31, 2021. Based on the applied tube techniques, two groups were defined; group 1, patients who underwent classical tube thoracostomy, group 2, patients who underwent tube thoracostomy with the recommended preventive measures for COVID-19. The collected data were compared between the two groups. Results: 106 patients met the study criteria and were included in the study. The difference in the length of the tube duration time between the old or new technique was statis...

Material and Methods: Our study was conducted retrospectively on patients who were operated on for NSCLC diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. The International Cancer Control Association and the American Cancer Committee eighth TNM classification system were evaluated in our study. Case groups at this stage were divided into two main groups as EGFR gene mutation (+/-) and data between the clinical behaviours of these two main groups were investigated. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, gender, smoking, and type of surgery (p = 0.727, p = 0.936, p = 0.463). The relationship between EGFR and surgery type was also not significant (2 = 0.268; p = 0.992). There were no statistically significant difference between the medians of Suv-Max value (z = 1.083; p = 0.279). Among 653 cases in all NSCLC aden...
