The aim of the investigation was to find out the level of influence of different environmental factors on wheat quality indices; to follow the response of the varieties to various combinations of growing conditions; to investigate the ability of the varieties to realize their potential for quality under specific environments. The investigation was carried out at Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo (DAI) and at Institute of Agriculture and Seed Science, Obraztsov Chiflik, Rouse (OCH) during 2004 – 2007 by the Latin square method in 5 replications. The expression of 6 grain quality indices which give information about various quality aspects was analyzed: test weight, sedimentation value of flour, wet gluten content in rain, valorimeric value (valorimeter, conditional units), and loaf volume, determined according to the methods adopted at the DAI labora...

The aim was to follow the response of these varieties under various growing conditions with regard to some quality parameters and to determine which of them were able to realize better their quality potential under changeable environments. The varieties were grown by the Latin square design (6 replicates, each of 15 m 2). The following characters were examined: test weight (TW), wet gluten content (WGC), sedimentation value (SDS), dough resistance (DRes), valorimeric value (Val) and loaf volume (LVol). The most variable by years (85.4%) is dough resistance and test weight was most stable (2.42%). Aglika, Slaveya and Lazarka varieties showed high stability of each quality index. The new varieties Slaveya and Laza...

In order to determine the reasons for such variations the effect of the growing conditions on grain yield from the winter wheat cultivars with the highest distribution in production were investigated. The cultivars were investigated during four successive years at twelve different locations in Bulgaria with contrasting environmental components such as soil and climate. The phenotypic response of the cultivars was followed with a focus on the size of the yield and the direction of variation within the group of cultivars as a result of each factor: season, location of growing, genotype, and their complex interactions. The collected data were analyzed with the help of several well-known statistical software, (Statistica 7, Statgraphics XV, Jmp 10), which provided sufficient information on the genotype x environment intera...

Influence of extreme environmental changes on grain quality of winter common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 19: 690-695 Situation and purpose: A field experiment was carried out under the conditions of north-eastern Bulgaria to establish the effect of the long and severe drought in 2007 on common wheat grain quality. For this purpose, grain quality-determining parameters formed during the two contrasting years were compared. Methods: Under the field conditions of a competitive varietal trial the most important indices which characterize grain quality were analyzed. The comparison was based on the data of the indices during year 2006 which was very favorable for formation of high quality grain. The grain quality, expressed through its specific parameters, of dozens of promising lines was analyzed in detail and compared to model cultivars. The actual change of the quality indices was followed in direct...

The aim was to identify the most stable ones among them with regard to productivity under the conditions of both north and south Bulgaria, and to clarify the behavior of the cultivar with regard to grain yield according to the expression of its productivity components. Methods: To achieve the above aim, various statistical methods and approaches were applied to investigate the correlations of the traits, their variation and effect on grain yield. A method for spatial visualization of the cultivar’s behavior was used according to each of the traits depending on the environment of the respective investigated location over a three-year period. An Integral Breeding Assessment was made attempting to explain in detail the effect of the traits on grain yield (its level and stability). Key results: Each cultivar demonstrated unique behavior with regard to productivity (traits) and to grain yi...

An important prerequisite for this is the including in breeding of new gene plasma with variable origin adequate to the growing environments and the desired goal. The aim of this investigation was to study the productivity and the elements of yield of foreign winter wheat cultivars under the conditions of Dobrudzha region. The investigation was carried out during 2011-2013 in the trial field of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute (DAI). Twenty-four cultivars of foreign origin were tested. Their yield was compared to two standards: Enola and Sadovo 1. The cultivars were planted in harvest plots each of 10 m 2 in two replications. The structural elements of yield were analysed, as well as some traits and properties characterizing the variation of the separate wheat cultivars. The following traits related to productivity were investigated: vegetation period, plant height yield, number of productive tillers, grain weight per spike, number of grains per spike and 1000 kernel weight. Cultivars Kantata, Sonata, Sixtus and Podoima demonstrated highest production potential realizing a yield of more than 8 t/ha, averaged for the three years of investigation. Highest variation was observed in the traits grain weight per spike and number of grains per spike. The above mentioned genotypes are suitable cultivars which can be successfully involved in the breeding program of DAI with regard to the index yield.

The aim of the study was: i) to find out a possible relation between wheat quality and the separate low molecular loci and ii) to examine the potential of some of the existing Glu-A3 alleles to increase the quality. Five indices were investigated that covered almost all aspects of grain quality: sedimentation value, wet gluten content, dough stability, bread volume, quality index and valorimeter. The samples for quality analysis were from a 3-year period of investigation. Different statistical approaches were used to study the influence of Glu-A3 on the level of the indices. The LMW-GS were determined by SDS-PAGE (Payne et al. 1980). It was determined that locus Glu-A3 had the strongest influence on quality among the loci, that determine the low molecular glutenins. The Glu-A3 alleles influenced the end-use quality irrespective of the HMW-GS and LMW-GS composition background against which their effect was expressed. There were important variations among the separate alleles of Glu-A3 locus for their direct effect on end-used quality. Glu-A3f had strong positive effect on the end-use quality against the background of all HMW combinations. Glu-A3b had a similar positive effect. The Glu-A3b allele was connected with high quality in wheat but its effect was weaker than that of Glu-A3f and was not significant for some of the investigated indices.

Twenty-five different HMW-GS patterns were observed. The most frequent combination was 2*, 7+9, 5+10 (23.76%) and N, 7+9, 5+10 (14.85%). Twenty-eight different LMW-GS patterns were established as Glu-A3c, Glu-B3b, Glu-D3c and Glu-A3e, Glu-B3b, Glu-D3c being the most frequent. The average Glu-score of the investigated wheat varieties was comparatively high (8.0). One of the reasons for the high score was the gradually removing of subunit 2+12 at locus Glu-D1, which effect on bread making quality was negative. The potential of locus Glu-D1 was still unused for improving end-use quality of wheat and for broadening the genetic diversity of germplasm. The established database describing the HMW and LMW-GS of DAI bread wheat varieties may be useful for breeders who want to use Bulgarian germplasm in their breeding programs.

The investigation is carried out in the field of Dobroudja Agricultural Institute, General Toshevo for the period 1996-2003. For revealing the way of inheritance of the flower color are used parents with violet and white flowers. Parent forms with normal and simple leaves are used to determine the mode of leaf shape inheritance. The chi-square test is used to test the goodness of fit to different genetics ratios. The investigation reveals that the two traits are governed by single genes. The violet flowers and normal leaves are dominant over the white flowers and simple leaves, respectively.
