Research paper thumbnail of Adaptive Armature Resistance Control of Virtual Synchronous Generators to Improve Power System Transient Stability

The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) emerged as a way to contribute to the system stabilization by emulating the behavior of traditional synchronous machines in the power converters operation. This paper proposes a modification in the VSG implementation to improve its contribution to the power system transient stability. The proposal is based on the virtualization of the resistive superconducting fault current limiters’ (SFCL) behavior through an adaptive control that performs the VSG armature resistance change in short-circuit situations. A theoretical analysis of the problem is done based on the equal-area criterion, simulation results are obtained using PSCAD, and experimental results are obtained in a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test bench to corroborate the proposal. This setup is used for testing power transformers as it allows to verify their performance under operating conditions regarding aspects such as heating, voltage regulation, and mounting robustness. The main goal of the study is centered on replacing a full power Back-to-Back converter (1 pu) by a fractional power one (less than 0.1 pu). The converter, a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is a series connected between two equally sized transformers and controls the current flowing in the system. Load profile configurations set according to power factor, current harmonics, or even power level can be imposed to evaluate the performance of the Transformer Under Test (TUT) and the entire system. Theoretical analysis, and simulation results employing Matlab/Simulink platform, considering a typical transformer of a 75 kVA power distribution grid with 13.8 kV/220 V voltage are presented to corrob...

The electronic ballast is based on a high-frequency dither signal, which shapes the input current in a sinusoidal waveform. In order to reduce the electronic ballast components the self-oscillation technique has been employed. An electronic ballast prototype operating at 25 kHz has been implemented to drive two 40-W straight-type fluorescent lamps from a 127-V utility line. High power factor is achieved even though the electronic ballast drives just one fluorescent lamp. The experimental results demonstrated the electronic ballast operation.

Research paper thumbnail of Design criteria for SEPIC and Cuk converters as power factor preregulators in discontinuous conduction mode

Proceedings of the 1992 International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Control, Instrumentation, and Automation, 2000

There are two major approaches in implementing control circuits in PFP: the multiplier approach and the voltage-follower approach. The simplest one is the voltage-follower approach because the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), and only one loop control is required. SEPIC and CUK converters present a great advantage over boost and fly-back topologies in DCM: an input current with low harmonic content can be obtained by correctly choosing inductors L, and L, of the converter with a fixed operation frequency, as is demonstrated here. Also some discussion about the intermedium capacitor C, as well some advantages and disadvantages of the aplication is done. Simulation and experimental results support the approach. Therefore, SEPIC and CUK converters in DCM seem to be good choices to use as PFP.-Domingos S. L. The proposed power supply is based on a modified version of the zero voltage switching full-bridge phase-shift dc-dc converter, which incorporates commutation auxiliary inductors to provide zero voltage switching for the entire load range, as well as a commutation aid circuit to clamp the output diode voltage. The control strategy is based on two control loops operating in cascade mode. The inner loop maintains a regulated output current, whereas the external voltage loop the regulates output voltage, independently of load changes and input voltage variations. To obtain a high reliability converter, the control circuit has been implemented using just two ICs. The phase-shift regulator UC3875 IC generates the gate drive signal to the MOSFETs. The control loop regulators are implemented using the TL074 IC. Theoretical analysis and experimental results have been obtained for a 0-50VlO-lOA power supply operating at 100kHz.
