With this in mind, I think of Indigenous spirituality as representing the sacred sense of being significantly interconnected with all things in the universe, both seen and unseen. I contend that such a sensibility can contribute to survival, peace, health, and happiness as it did for tens of thousands of years for precontact Indigenous Peoples. Surely, it makes sense to bring such spirituality into the classroom. For organized religions, doing this can be a challenging endeavor owing to laws and ethics related to the separation of church and state. However, since Indigenous spirituality is generally not considered a religion, teachers may have a less diffi...

All three schools affirm a commitment to social change and social justice. The Educational Leadership and Change (ELC) doctoral program was developed in 1996 as a way to influence educational reform and to make doctoral education accessible to working adults, especially those from underserved communities. During its development, the program struggled and faltered as it tried to establish its identity and work toward its goals. After an abrupt change in leadership, two women emerged to form a co-dean leadership team: Susan Tiara, Ph.D. and Judy Witt, Ph.D. Looking for a model that emphasized relationships and a more global outlook, they adopted Total Transformational Management Process (Mink, Esterhuysen, Mink, & Owen, 1993) as the conceptual framework for ELC's gover...

Although initially about addressing the historical and continuing oppression of Indigenous peoples, I expand the goals to include the survival of all humans and our non-human relatives. In light of our global crises, we must move more forcefully toward truth, reconciliation and Indigenous sovereignty, while at the same time decolonizing and bringing Indigenous worldview and local Indigenous knowledge into and across the curriculum for the benefit of all students. Unfortunately, resistance from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous critics of this mandate continue. A main concern relates to who should be allowed to implement such education and who should have access to it. I offer a rationale for engaging all people in this enterprise in spite of the complexity and risks that are outweighed by the profound potential for bringing our world back into balance. Point...

Until the dominant culture fundamentally investigates and modifies its essential worldview with one more in harmony with that of traditional indigenous tribes, such as those of America's first nation peoples, moral education and effective civic engagement will remain another failed effort at "school renewal."
