Notwithstanding, in low to mid-income countries these maps are used to maximum effect in that they represent different gradations of adverse living conditions understood as unmet basic needs. Our aim in this paper is to offer a model for the study of multidimensional poverty in high-income countries –Allen County, Indiana– that is able to capture the ways in which problems of need in housing, educa-tion, health, employment, nutrition, and environmental safety combine to produce households with joint disadvantages. We believe that multidimensional poverty maps constitute a superior way to grasp the needs of populations than single variable maps or poverty line methods. Data gathering will proceed by mailing a questionnaire to a sample of 3500 households in Allen Coun-ty. Data will be processed through the app...

INTRODUCTIONThe prevalence of mental health problems among the college student population is on t... more INTRODUCTIONThe prevalence of mental health problems among the college student population is on the rise, yet prior research suggests that a majority of students who experience psychological stress do not seek mental health counseling (Dixon and Kurpius 2008; Gallagher 2008; Kitzrow 2003; Rosenthal and Wilson 2008; Yorgason et al. 2008). However, social support and interpersonal coping skills may allow some students to adapt to college better than others. Psychological stress is one of the mental health issues that students experience after entering college, although an increasing proportion report experiencing psychological distress prior to college entry. Given that stress among college students may result in increased mental health problems, combined with the persistently low rates of participation among college counseling centers across the United States, the need for further research is warranted. Mental health counseling includes on-campus services, public mental health servic...

Objective: To measure the grip strength of volunteers in 2 distinct clinical “environments.” Methodology: Twenty subjects were randomized in a crossover design to undergo grip strength testing in positive and negative environments as created by the distinctly different behavioral/communication approaches of the research staff. Each subject underwent 4 consecutive trials in both settings. Results: A paired t- test was conducted to determine if the contrasting environments impacted the volunteer’s performance. Eight of the 10 subjects demonstrated a significantly stronger grip in the positive environment. One subject’s grip remained essentially unchanged and one subject provided a slightly higher performance in the negative setting. Conclusions: The study su...

The current study explored foster care youths transitions to adulthood to identify factors that contribute to or inhibit prosocial adult outcomes. Structured data derived from interviews with foster careexperienced adults and child welfare professionals as well as focus groups with foster care-experienced adults and foster parents were analyzed using content analysis to examine the transition to adulthood from foster care. Positive or negative life outcomes resulted from two key mechanisms: a) issues related to family of origin (inadequate parenting, abuse); and b) foster care experiences (including a pattern of "drift"). We explore disidentification, a new social psychological concept. Throughout, key players provide policy recommendations for the child welfare system.

W e highlight shifts in the influence of friends and in the nature of friendship choices, and suggest how these changes can facilitate desistance processes. While key events (e.g., marriage) are important to an understanding of such changes, shifts in the actor's perspective and identity are also integral to the process of making successful network realignments. Similarities and differences by gender in the effects of adult social influence processes are also examined.
