Research paper thumbnail of Effect of diets with different energy and protein levels on performance of grower ostriches

Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 2008

Grower ostriches that are fed more expensive diets with high energy and high protein to maximise ... more Grower ostriches that are fed more expensive diets with high energy and high protein to maximise growth can exhibit health problems. Despite this there is an ‘industry view’ that birds can be grown to slaughter weight within 8 months when high energy and protein diets are used, rather than 12–14 months using conventional diets. Given this scenario it is likely that there would be lower total feed costs associated with feeding a high energy and high protein diet for only 8 months compared with feeding a traditional diet for 12–14 months. The purpose of this experiment was to conduct an on-farm trial with grower ostriches (liveweight 48.7–50.0 kg) housed in a feedlot to examine their performance when subjected to four dietary treatments fed over 4 weeks: (i) treatment 1: birds fed a commercial grower diet with 10.7 MJ/kg and 138.0 g/kg of protein; (ii) treatment 2: birds fed a low energy (10.0 MJ/kg) and low protein (126.0 g/kg) diet; (iii) treatment 3: birds fed a high energy (12.5 M...

The aim of our paper was to establish if the interval between the administrations of two doses of PGF 2α influence the rates of conception/pregnancy after the Ovsynch synchronization program of the estrus and ovulation. The treatments of pre-synchronization with PGF2α were started in the interval postpartum 46-50 days. At the first lot of cows, the interval between two administrations of PGF 2α was 7 days; at the second lot, the interval between the two administrations of PGF 2α was 12 days and at the third lot the interval between two administrations of PGF 2α was 14 days. As a source of PGF2α, we used 2 ml Proliz (I. Pasteur, Bucharest România) (400 mcg Cloprostenol). At all the three groups, we started the Ovsynch program at 7 days after the last administration of PGF2α by administration of 100 mcg GnRH (Ovarelin), after 7 days we administered 400 mcg Cloprostenol, and after 48 hours we administered the last dose of 100 mcg GnRH. All females were inseminated at 16-20 hours after the last dose of GnRH. At the pre-synchronized cows with 2xPGF 2α, at interval of 7 days, the rate of conception was 81.43%, significantly higher (p˂0.05) than at the pre-syncronized cow at 12 or 14 days (71.15%, 71.64% respectively). With regard at the pregnancy rates were 70%, significantly higher (p˂0.05) compared with pre-synchronized cows at 12 or 14 days (55.77%, 56.72% respectively). Are not significant differences (p> 0.05) between the pre-syncrhonized cows at 12 or 14 days.

Plymouth Rock breed was imported for the first time to Romania from the Studler Company, France in 1969. This paper is aiming to perform a profound analysis of the development patterns of the neural tube in the two breeds, by measurements carried out at 30, 40, 50, and 60 hours of incubation. Observations show that the closure of the neural canal and its transformation into a tube follows an undulatory pattern, of which positive and negative curls are diametrically opposed in the two breeds, while the development speed during the whole studied period have a relative similar value between the two breeds. We estimate that the two breeds have a good combinative capacity, which recommend the utilization of these genetic materials to obtain hybrids for producing "peasant-type" chicken meat, very well-appreciated by the Europeans between the two World Wars.

The genetic material was represented by broiler chickens that belonged to the "Ross-308" hybrid, with two groups (LC-control group and LE experimental group). During the growth periods (starter, growing and finishing) they have received compound feed ad libitum, with different energy and protein levels (LC-conforming to recommendations of Aviagen Company; LE-higher with 10%). After slaughter, from each group were sampled breast muscles (five per sex) and for P. major were determined: the weight, pH value, the thickness of myocytes (fiber diameter, cross-sectional area of fibers). At the LE group, high levels of dietary proteins and energy has significantly influenced pH value and the thickness of myocytes in the P. major muscle, as compared with LC. The sex and slaughter age has significantly influenced the fibers diameter from P. major muscle, which was thicker at female chickens, as compared with male chickens and at 42 days age vs. 35 days.

The thoracic perimeter as conformation and morphoproductive type indicator in the VMT effective has values between 199,4 cm and 208.4 cm. The cow mothers of bulls from Covasna county are in framed in the massive type for body weight, having average values between 509.40-762.60 cm. Analyzing total milk amount in VMT and CVMT from Covasna county, during the period 2004-2007, we claim that the average production in the I st lactation in VMT is comprised between 6793 kg in 2005 and 7503.5 kg in 2004. This lactation presents easily higher values in CVMT, on the same generation. The performances differences from one generation to another one could be assigned to the realized effect of selection by using high value male reproducers, and also to the conditions of the growing technology. The same aspects are maintained for the II nd lactation, III rd lactation and over it.

The method used in this paper work is modeling, which exist in the most animal breeding scientifically papers. After the simulations, we observed that the most convenient variant was that which prefigure use of collateral selection and a maximum value for i/T ratio which can be obtained when average length of service is 5 years for females and 1 year for males.

Studied characters were mill production, fat percent, protein percent, and somatic cell count. There were analyzed the milk samples with SOMACOUNT to "Dorna Lactate" and dates have been discussed with MATLAB program. The phenotypical correlation values have been varied between +0,356 ÷ +0,542 for fat percent and protein percent; +0,080 ÷ +0,218 for fat percent and somatic cell count,-0,005 ÷ +0,117 for protein percent and somatic cell count; +0,012 ÷ +0,226 for milk production and fat percent;-0,643 ÷ +0,010 for milk production and protein percent and-0,467 ÷-0,114 for milk production and somatic cell count.

Research paper thumbnail of Somite Number Evolution During Early Embryogenesis in Chicken Embryos from Transylvanian Naked Neck and Plymouth Rock Breeds

Plymouth Rock breed was imported for the first time to Romania from the Studler Company, France in 1969. This paper is aiming to perform a profound analysis of the development patterns of the somite number in the two breeds, by measurements carried out at 26, 30, 40, 50, and 60 hours of incubation. Observations demonstrate that somite forming is carrying on in a similar way as the other embryo complex characteristics following an undulatory curve whose curls are different in the two breeds, but the forming speed during the whole studied period is similar. We estimate that the two breeds have a good combinative capacity, which recommend the utilization of these genetic materials to obtain hybrids for producing "peasant-type" chicken meat, very well-appreciated by the Europeans between the two World Wars.

Research paper thumbnail of Study regarding the quantitative evolution of the wild animals populations for hunting from 59 Giarmata Aria, forest district Timişoara, in 2006-2010 period

Bulletin of University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca. Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2011

The aim of the present paper is to study the quantitative evolution of the hunting population for the 13th species, in the period 2006-2010, in the hunting terrain 59 Giarmata, from Forest Domain-Timisoara, with a total surface of 8417 ha. The results showed that from the 13th studied species only 7 were identified from which 5 species kept the effectives constant, fact that demonstrates the existence of a balance between the number of individuals and the biogenic capacity of this hunting terrain. In return the European hare (Lepus europaeus P.) and Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus L.) registered on the entire studied period a decrease of the effectives with 33.9% and 18% respectively.
