animal rights attorney, the Director of Legal Affairs for the Animal Protection League of New Jersey and a member of the steering committee of the League of Humane Voters of New Jersey.
Experience
worked for a variety of animal protection groups, including Animal Protection League of NJ (f.k.a. NJ Animal Rights Alliance), The Bear Education And Resource Group, the Animal Protection PAC, The Humane Society of the US, and the Animal Welfare Institute. She has also founded two student animal rights groups, and served on the Board of the Boston Vegetarian Society.
As an attorney, I represented NJARA and the BEAR Group in a lawsuit against the state of NJ, successfully invalidating the state's bear hunt plan in 2007. I is also a former chair of the NJ State Bar Association's Animal Law Committee, and is the author of "Bear Hunt Controversy Shines the Spotlight on New Jersey's Wildlife Law," published in New Jersey Lawyer Magazine.
I have also worked for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
I have been an animal rights activist for over 30 years, vegetarian for nearly as long, and vegan for over 25 years. I share a home with three humans, two rabbits and three guinea pigs, and is a life member of the House Rabbit Society.
Education
I holds a B.S. in Applied Biological Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from the University of Southern California Law Center.

"Society is evolving to recognize that animals are sentient and deserve to be treated as more than just property. We have the power to create a better world in which animals will be guaranteed certain rights. In the meantime, everyone can do their part by speaking out for animals and making choices that do not support animal cruelty."

Roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibitors tend to keep the animals in smaller pens or cages. Sometimes, barren concrete and metal bars are all a tiger or bear will know for their entire lives. Larger, accredited zoos try to distance themselves from these operations by touting how well the animals are treated, but to animal rights activists, the issue not how well the animals are treated, but whether we have a right to confine them for our amusement or "education."

The purpose of this study was to determine if changes in CBF could be detected by dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) in elderly human subjects taking EGb. Methods DSC-MRI was performed in nine healthy men (mean age 61±10 years) before and after 4 weeks of 60 mg EGb taken twice daily. One subject underwent six consecutive scans to evaluate intrasubject reproducibility. CBF values were computed before and after EGb, and analyzed at three different levels of spatial resolution, using voxel-based statistical parametric mapping (SPM), and regions of interest in different lobes, and all regions combined. Results Normalized intrasubject CBF (nCBF) measurements had a standard deviation of 7% and 4% in gray and white matter (WM) regions, respectively. SPM using an uncorrected, voxel-level threshold of P≤0.001 showed a small CBF increase in the left parietal-occipital region. CBF in individual lobar regions did not show any significant change post-EGb, but all regions combined showed a significant increase of non-normalized CBF after EGb (15% in white and 13% in gray matter, respectively, P≤0.0001). Conclusion nCBF measured by DSC-MRI has good intrasubject reproducibility. In this small cohort of normal elderly individuals, a mild increase in CBF is found in the left parietal-occipital WM after EGb, as well as a small but statistically significant increase in global CBF.

Advance oxidation processes (AOPs) of ozone and Fenton reagent were applied for pre-chemical oxidation, which reduced the degree of color and organic matter simultaneously increasing the biodegradability of the wastewater. The majority of the organic matter was removed by BAF. When using ozone as pre-chemical oxidation, the operation is simpler. The combined processes of AOPs, including ozone and Fenton reagent, followed by BAF reduced the color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) to less than 20 degrees and 40 mg l(-1), respectively from the influent concentration of about 4000 degree color and 300 mg l(-1) COD. The effluent water quality could meet the required standard for grey water reuses.

At physical examination, she was a short obese woman who was wheelchair bound. The scleras were discolored. The tympanic membranes were intact. Audiogram findings demonstrated profound hearing loss on the left side and moderately severe mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss on the right side. In the past, she had fluctuations in her hearing with overall progressive deterioration; steroid treatment was unsuccessful. Unenhanced computed tomographic (CT) scans of the petrous temporal bones were obtained with a bone algorithm. Transverse scans of the right side and coronal scans ) of both sides were obtained.

In the authors' opinion, the greatest difficulty lies in denying the treatment to patients with advanced metastatic disease, where other surgical or medical treatments may have greater morbidity and mortality. The few complications reported have been related to excessive PMMA injection, underlining the need for excellent imaging conditions to control the cement injection.

SWS results in ischemic brain injury, seizures, and neurologic deficits. We hypothesized that a decrease in quantitative EEG (qEEG) power, on the affected side, correlates with clinical severity in subjects with SWS.

The clinical manifestations are heterogeneous, and the diagnosis is often based on information acquired from multiple levels of inquiry. MR spectroscopy has previously been shown to help detect an abnormal accumulation of lactate in brain parenchyma and CSF in association with mitochondrial disorders, but the frequency of detection is largely unknown. We sought to examine the frequency of detectable elevations of CNS lactate by proton MR spectroscopy in a population of children and young adults with suspected mitochondrial disease.

Perfusion MR imaging showed early changes compatible with impaired venous drainage in the affected hemisphere, whereas proton MR spectroscopic imaging revealed a focal parietal area of elevated choline without significant alteration of N-acetylaspartate levels. The perfusion and subtle metabolic abnormalities are comparable with the extent of the overlying leptomeningeal enhancement, illustrating the early pathophysiological manifestation of this disease.

We report a case of a cerebral abscess, which ruptured into the ventricular system, including its findings on both diffusion-weighted images and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. Purulent material within the left lateral ventricle, similar to that of the central abscess cavity, was strongly hyperintense on diffusion-weighted images. However, variable signal intensity changes were observed on the ADC map; these probably corresponded to regional variation of the concentration of protein in the purulent material. In this case, both diffusion-weighted images and ADC maps were important and complementary in the evaluation of ventricular extension of an intracerebral abscess.

CT angiography illustrated osteohypertrophy with periostitis and associated soft tissue hypertrophy directly corresponding to the distribution of the cutaneous port-wine stain. Extended maxillectomy was performed because of rapid growth and clinical debilitation, with surgical pathology revealing juvenile ossifying fibroma.

Endovascular treatment with thrombolysis has offered some hope for affected patients; however, overall outcomes have been less than satisfactory. In this report, we present the results of our approach in six consecutive cases of acute vertebrobasilar ischemic stroke by combined proximal vessel stent placement and thrombolysis.

Males are more frequently and severely affected than females. Nevertheless, a previous study (Fatemi, Barker et al. 2003) has found brain abnormalities in women heterozygous for X-ALD, as well as increasing neurological disability with age. This study quantified and compared white matter (WM) involvement in cerebrally symptomatic and asymptomatic X-ALD heterozygotes to age-matched normal controls. METHOD AND MATERIALS Between 1987-2008, 77 female X-ALD heterozygotes (range 13-75 years) underwent conventional brain MR (T1, T2, PD, FLAIR) at 1.5T. T2-weighted sequences were scored for WM lesions using a modified leukodystrophy scoring system. Patients were classified as either cerebrally symptomatic or asymptomatic based on neurological exam. Patients who experienced symptoms of myelopathy without cere...
