Number sense has been considered as one of the most important mathematical notions to be addresse... more Number sense has been considered as one of the most important mathematical notions to be addressed in school mathematics in the 21st century. In this paper, we identify how students of a public middle school, located in a rural area in Mexico, showed several aspects of number sense by performing tasks involving arithmetic operations in a shopping context. Students invented mental and written calculation strategies that provide evidence of understanding regarding numbers and operations. Students used fantasy money as a representation system to decompose quantities in non-standard ways, or referred to strategies employed by unschooled people. Compensation strategies that involve modifying the quantities before applying the written algorithm for subtraction, in order to perform a subtraction without regrouping, also appeared. That is, it was identified a transfer from mental calculation strategies to a paper and pencil scenario for facilitating calculations during problem solving, which is an indicator of student' creativity and number sense. Additionally, the proposed tasks provided evidence that contextualized tasks could promote the understanding of decimal numbers.

Successful completion of endurance exercise is facilitated by conditioning that enhances the capa... more Successful completion of endurance exercise is facilitated by conditioning that enhances the capacity of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems to maintain a high level of aerobic activity. Insufficiency or disease in these systems may be diagnosed using routine haematology and serum chemistry testing. Pre-race blood samples obtained from 82 endurance-trained sled dogs were used to test the hypothesis that common haematological and serum chemistry values could identify subjects with occult disease, decreasing the likelihood of their finishing a multi-day exercise challenge. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the combinations of specific biomarkers that best predicted the eventual outcome of the exercise challenge for an individual dog. This analysis constructed six different predictive formulas. In all cases, the formulae contained the pre-race values for creatine kinase and some measurement of erythrocyte abundance. When a probability of 0.4 was used as a cutoff value, all dogs with values below the cutoff did not complete the race. These results suggest that in a population of healthy, aerobically conditioned subjects, routine clinical biomarkers can be used to identify subjects unsuited to performance for endurance exercise.

This study was an initial step to determine the feasibility of matching student teachers (ST'... more This study was an initial step to determine the feasibility of matching student teachers (ST's) with cooperating teachers (CT's) on the basis of similar educational beliefs. This protect grew out of the concern of Oklahoma State University student teaching supervisors that the mismatching of ST's with CT's on the basis of dissimilar perceptions regarding educational beliefs and . practices often leads to a nonproductive relationship between the ST and CT. During 1976 fall semester, all OSU ST's enrolled for elementary student teaching and their CT's (N=132) were asked to participate. Prior to the commencement of student teaching, 31 CT's and 50 ST's completed and returned inventories assessing educational beliefs. Inventories were: The Study of Beliefs Inventory (PBI and TPI), Beliefs about Teaching and Learning Inventory (BTLI), and the Behavioral Problems Inventory (BPI).
