Update Dental College Journal, Apr 1, 2018

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues (periodontium) which s... more Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues (periodontium) which surround and support the teeth, that results in attachment loss and alveolar bone destruction leads to ultimate tooth loss. It is caused by the bacteria present in dental plaque, which is a tenacious substance that forms on teeth and gingiva just after teeth are brushed. Periodontal treatment is aimed at controlling the infection in order to stop the progression of the disease and to be able to maintain a healthy periodontium. Mechanical debridement of supragingival and subgingival biofilms, together with adequate oral hygiene measures is the standard periodontal therapy. This mechanical subgingival biofilm debridement consists of an initial (nonsurgical /phase I) phase involving scaling and root planing (SRP) and the elimination of plaque retentive factors, followed by a surgical phase (if needed) including the elevation of a tissue flap and bone remodeling in further stages. The adjunct use of antibiotics has proven to additionally improve the outcome of periodontal treatment. A clinical case of a 40-years-old male patient with generalized severe chronic periodontitis with localized gingival swelling was treated with nonsurgical (phase I) periodontal therapy that was confined to oral hygiene instruction (OHI), SRP with an adjunct antimicrobial regimen.

Methodology: A sample survey by an oral examination of 198 school students, 11–16 years of age, was drawn from a Kalatali, Cox's Bazar District school Bangladesh who were available on October 19, 2019. Our participants were limited to students whose parents were agreed to participate in the survey and provided informed consent. Clinical examination was performed to identify the prevalence of developmental dental anomaly using portable light, dental mirror, and oral explorer. Dental abnormalities were discovered after examining the complete maxillary and mandibular arch. Results: Of the total respondents under the study, 56.6% were female, and 43.4% were male. Among the diagnosed disturbances, developmental anomalies in upper lateral incisors prevailed in 34.3% of cases. The cusp of Carabelli appeared to be the most dominant one covering almost 73.9% of the existing coverage of anomalies. However, the presence of the cusp of Carabelli in the permanent dentition was found in 76.2% of cases. Conclusion: Out of several dental anomalies, cups of Carabelli came out as the most prevalent dental anomaly among the sample shows 11.15 Chi-square value of the study subjects.

Locoregional recurrence after primary surgery is common for oral cancer due to aggressive local invasion and metastasis. The objective of this study was to analyze the predictors of locoregional failure in a tertiary center hospital. Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort study was designed to analyze the presence of recurrences of OSCC patients after surgery. The purposive sampling technique was used to include patients in the study. Excision of the primary tumor was done with neck dissection followed by reconstruction with local or regional flap. The variables considered were demographic information, site, TNM stage at diagnosis, margin status, lymph node metastasis, perineural invasion, recurrence, and the adjuvant therapy used for disease control. Patients were followed up by hospital revisits or phone calls and necessary information was collected...

Megaloblastic anaemia is the result of folate and vitamin B12 deficiency in more than 95% of cases. We hereby report a case of megaloblastic anaemia in a 23-year old female having glossitis and a burning sensation on the tongue. The blood picture showed megaloblastic anaemia and haematological tests confirmed the diagnosis. The patient positively responded to vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation. The presence of oral signs and symptoms offer the dentist an opportunity to participate in the diagnosis of this condition. Early diagnosis is important to prevent deficiency. This paper explains the oral changes induced by dietary deficiency of cobalamin or folate in a patient with megaloblastic anaemia.
