Pericles of Greece recognised that a government whose administration has respect not for a few but to the multitude, is called a Democracy. The first, which believes in the authority of Vedas, is known as the Orthodox or Astik tradition. This tradition includes Samkhya yoga, Uttar Mimansa, Purva Mimansa, Nyaya, Vaishesika, Upanisads and the Gita. On the other hand, the second tradition, which does not accept the authority of the Vedas, called the heterodox, or Nustik tradition, includes the Buddhist philosophy, the Jain philosophy and the Charvak philosophy. It is pertinent to mention in this context that the terms Nastik and Astik are not to be considered, as they are in common parlance: Astik as one that believes in the existence of God and Nastik, which does not. Astik and Nastik here refer to acceptance or denial of the authority of Vedas.
