This is because it followed the Islamic ideology related to building the land. This led to that all cities built during early Islamic ages had followed the same principles in any part of the Islamic world. It is argued that the characteristics of the urban space configuration have a big role in making these cities successful environments. The key aspect in this matter is the distribution of land uses within the urban structure as it is directly associated with people movement and the distribution of their activities. The Friday mosques as the most important components of the Islamic city was located in a way that gave the city its own character. This study supposes that the distribution of the Friday mosques was affected by the way in which the urban space was configured. It aimed to find out to what extent this configuration influenced locating the Friday mosques in the urban fabric. Using space...

The aim of this study is to examine to what extent the outdoor environment of Kirkuk University-Iraq is able to offer a responsive environment as well as put design insights for future development. The study is limited to the main campus located in Sayyada district, as it is one of the relatively newly established campuses in Iraq. The methodology used in this study includes both quantitative and qualitative techniques. As a quantitative technique, a questionnaire distributed among 100 users including students, faculty and staff was used. Whilst, an observation survey was used as a qualitative method to support the results. Triangulation of the findings was utilized to give more reliability to the findings. Findings revealed several issues on design aspects related to building arrangement, path layout, walkability, le...

The study was conducted on the main campus of Baghdad University- Iraq, as a case study. In order to fulfil its practical parts, the research adopted a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods including a questionnaire, in-depth interviews and observations as data collection techniques. Findings included some urban design characteristics as key indicators of this impact such as directness, permeability, traffic speed, compactness, campus size and car parks. Through its conclusions, the study contributes to addressing issues related to campus sustainability in Iraq and elsewhere in the world.

There is an absence of a clear and substantive understanding of the role of physical character in supporting sustainability of the campuses. Besides, these university campuses are suffering from problems in their physical settings that have led to weakness in sustainability issues. This study is to establish how physical character affects sustainability issues in university campuses, where the main campus of Baghdad University was selected as a case study for this research. A mix of quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted to conduct this study. While questionnaire survey technique was utilized to collect data quantitatively, observation survey and in-depth interview survey were used to support or explain the findings. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical frequencies, chi-square and logistic regression. Content analy...
