Additionally, the study analyzed the influence of gender on pharyngeal airway volume. (2) Methods: 80 CBCT scans of 40 male and 40 female patients (mean age: 15.38 + 1.10 years) fulfilling the eligibility criteria were included. CBCT scans were evaluated for pharyngeal airway volume using the In Vivo Dental 5.1 software. Additionally, CBCT-derived lateral cephalograms were used to assess various craniofacial morphology parameters. To examine the influences of gender on airway volume, T-test was carried out. Correlation between airway volume and craniofacial parameters were measured using Pearson correlation followed by regression analysis. The value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean airway volume was significantly greater in males than in females. A statistically significan...

There has been unparalleled use of smartphones and internet services to bear the major pitfall- social distancing- especially for elective treatment services. This demands a new paradigm shift from offline to online doctor-patient, student-educator, researcher-researcher operations. This articles provides an insight into potential role of orthodontic informatics to provide a combined platform to generate a learning system that routinely collects, correlates, and analyzes data for developing artificial intelligence programs, lab exploratory systems, clinical decision support systems and health-information exchange systems. In order to develop this system, orthodontic analytic communities as start-ups for developing user-friendly programs must be encouraged, where orthodontic in...

The COVID-19 pandemic has made dentists very assiduous about cross-infection during dental treatment, thereby delaying dental radiographs for treatment. However, patients needing dental emergency treatment in the ongoing pandemic require relevant intra/extraoral dental radiography for adequate diagnosis and treatment planning. Methods. This article is aimed at adding to the hot debate: Is delay for intraoral radiographs justified or a possible proxy? As a narrative review, it provides an insight into the reasons for delaying intra-oral dental radiographs during in the pandemic and options of the nontraditional radiographic techniques available until the pandemic subsides. Discussion and Conclusion. Cross-contamination concerns through respiratory droplets grow while using intraoral film holders that stimulate gag reflex, coughing, saliva secretion, and if proper disinfection protocols are not applied. Since the patients’ acquiring emergency dental treatment cannot be neg...

This case report presents a successful clinical case of progressive spacing of incisors (PSI) with gingival recession treated with proper alveolar root housing and autogenous grafting. A 24 year old girl reporting with mobility in mandibular anterior teeth was diagnosed Miller's class-II gingival recession of 7 mm and grade-II mobility in mandibular central incisors along with anterior tongue thrust habit. Spontaneous decrease in tooth mobility was achieved after correction of habit using fixed habit breaking appliance along with proper root positioning in the alveolar bone with fixed orthodontics. Post-debond, connective tissue gingival graft was performed using pouch and tunnel technique to achieve adequate root coverage. Thus interruption of tongue habit and correction of alveolar root housing is recommended for PSI with gingival recession.

The null hypothesis proposed was increasing grades of the course results in higher self esteem and poorer quality of life amongst students pursuing on undergraduate course in dentistry. Aim: The aim was to determine the relationship between severity of malocclusion, self esteem (SE) and orthognathic quality of life (OQoL) among female dental undergraduate students. Material and Methods: The study sample was divided batchwise into four groups according to the grades. Written questionnaires for SE and OQoL were given to 83 female undergraduate students with no craniofacial anomalies, medical problems, and history of previous orthodontic treatment. To determine the severity of malocclusion, the subjects were later examined for Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) score. Descriptive statistics for DAI, SE and OQOL were performed and elements of each group were compared using ANOVA. Spearman Rank Correlation coefficient was done to measure the level of association between the variables. Results & Discussion: While 3rd year students presented with higher DAI and least OQOL score, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between DAI and OQOL, indicating more negative psychological impact of malocclusion with learning. Interns had higher SE and maximum OQoL. ANOVA results showed only statistically significant difference between the groups for SE indicating more armour propre with training and maturity. However, no significant correlation was noted between SE and OQol. Conclusions: Malocclusion does hamper the quality of life but increasing grades and cumulative understanding also influence the self esteem amongst dental undergraduates.
