Amongst several biological risk factors, the disturbance of central serotonin neurotransmission is one important cause. Various research has allowed a better understanding of the development of this disorder, as well as allowing for improved treatment options in order to decrease the significant morbidity associated with this condition; among the more recent treatments, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are believed to be one of the best. During this review, the action and role of serotonin reuptake inhibitors at different levels will be discussed, along with their relevance and effectiveness in the treatment of premature ejaculation.

Research paper thumbnail of Preparing for Feedback in Context of Competency Based Medical Education Undergraduate Training in India

Though the competency framework provides multiple opportunities for feedback, it will have to be closely interwoven with every spoke of the wheel of the curriculum, as the curriculum rolls-over on the practical ground. The need to provide good feedback has been the major driver for advent of workplace-based assessment (WPBA) and other tools to assist criterion based and objective observations. Though it is essential to embed feedback longitudinally into the new competency framework and in CBA, we are uncertain as to how feedback is being currently practiced within the local culture; hence, a lot of groundwork needs to be done. We need to first identify opportunities for feedback within the competency framework, then reach a consensus on them through deliberations within our own departments so that feedback carves the much needed niche in the blueprint that universities will create to follow the competency framework in "letter and spirit". Deliberate opportunities for feedback will have to be created in each phase and in the blueprint for each subject taught in that phase, in order to ensure that feedback becomes a reality rather than mere assumption. Preparedness at both the giver and receiver's end, in a nonthreatening, congenial environment, needs emphasis at this juncture. This article explains the purpose of feedback, components of an ideal feedback and functional logistics.

The misconception among athletes and their coaches is that when an athlete breaks a record it is due to some "magic ingredient" and not because of training, hard work, mental attitude and championship performance. The personal motivation to win in competitive sports has been intensified by national, political, professional and economic incentives. Under this increased pressure athletes have turned to finding this "magic ingredient". Athlete turns to mechanical (exercise, massage), nutritional (vitamins, minerals), pharmacological (medicines) or gene therapies to have an edge over other players. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has already asked scientists to help find ways to prevent gene therapy from becoming the newest form of doping. The safety of the life of athletes is compromised with all forms of doping techniques, be it a side effect of a drug or a new technique of gene doping.

To study the role of memantine (NMDA antagonist) and capsaicin (TRPV1 antagonist) in an acute model of neuropathic pain in rats. Animals were divided into three groups of 6 animals each. The first group received carbamazepine, the second group received memantine while the third group received oral memantine and topical capsaicin. Neuropathic pain was induced by instilling a drop of 5M NaCl solution on the surface of the cornea in the test eye and then the number of eye wipes performed with ipsilateral forepaw was counted for a period of 30seconds. All three treatment categories, i.e. carbamazepine, memantine and memantine plus capsaicin group showed significant analgesia when compared to the control eye (p<0.05). Use of memantine alone o...

The present study was carried out to see the histopathological effects of Fluoxetine on the testis of adult albino rats. Fluoxetine was administered intraperitoneally to rats for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 12 weeks with mild (10mg/kg/day), moderate (20mg/kg/day) and severe doses (40mg/kg/day). Histological slides were prepared and stained with H and E stain. On examination, distortion of seminiferous tubules, decreased thickness of germinal epithelium, decreased diameter of seminiferous tubules and decreased counts of germinal cell lineage were found in treated groups. antidepressant, prototype of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), with a plasma half-life of 2 days. The healthcare community has problems inherent to complex, unequal power equations, and TO may be a useful means to understand and respond to their struggle. A 3-day workshop on TO was facilitated by the authors in the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) in Dehradun, India, in August 2017. The workshop culminated in the ‘Forum Theatre’, which included five short plays, each depicting a struggle due to real-life oppression faced by one or the other participant. The audience (about 200 invited members of the HIMS community) chose one play depending on the struggle with which they identified most. That play was ‘forumed’: spectators were invited to replace the struggling person and demonstrate how they would handle the oppression. Over the next week, participants reflected on the workshop through a structured online questionnaire. The feedback (n=16/2...

Fluoxetine is widely and inadvertently used as an antidepressant for various psychiatric illnesses in high doses and for long duration. The aim of present study was to establish the fact that higher doses and long term use of Fluoxetine (SSRI) cause change in the histology of epididymis of albino rats. The present study was carried out on 32 adult male albino rats. Fluoxetine was administered intraperitoneally for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 12 weeks with mild (10mg/kg/day), moderate (20mg/kg/day) and severe doses (40mg/kg/day). Histological slides were prepared and stained with H and E stain. On examination, Epithelial cell hypertrophy, Intracytoplasmic Vacuolations, intercellular vacuolations, reduced number of spermatozoa, sloughed testicular germ cells and cell debris in the Epididymal lumen were found in treated groups. These changes may cause infertility.

Material and methods: The present study was carried out on 72 adult albino rats. Fluoxetine was administered intraperitoneally for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 12 weeks with mild (10 mg/kg/day), moderate (20 mg/kg/day) and severe doses (40 mg/kg/day). Histological slides of kidney tissue were prepared and stained with H and E stain. Results: On examination, there were changes in the diameter of proximal convoluted tubule, distal convoluted tubule and collecting tubules in experimental groups of albino rats. Changes were also found in the histology of Bowman's capsule. Conclusion: Fluoxetine is widely and inadvertently used as an antidepressant for various psychiatric illnesses in high doses and for long duration. There is an essential need to know their safe dose and duration.
