This kind of highly-specific, sensual memory of childhood gives the autobiography both its originality and its universality and is, of course, the source of Little's strength as a fiction writer as well. Little by Little will, no doubt, be grouped with other books about the physically disabled and it is interesting from this point of view, challenging some of our current assumptions about education of the disabled. Young Jean had some of her happiest school experiences in a non-integrated class, for example. But the memoir is of far more general interest. Little simply speaks the lingua franca of childhood and it would be a rare child reader who would not find herself in the pages of this book.

An experimental study has been conducted in axisymmetric, co-flowing triple flames with different... more An experimental study has been conducted in axisymmetric, co-flowing triple flames with different equivalence ratios of the inner and outer reactant streams (2 < φ in < 3 and 0 φ out < 0.7). Different fuel combinations, like propane/propane, propane/methane or methane/methane in the inner and outer streams respectively, have been used in the experiments. The structures of the triple flames have been compared for the different fuel combinations and equivalence ratios. The conditions under which triple flames exhibit oscillation have been identified. During the oscillation, the non-premixed flame and the outer lean premixed flame flicker strongly, while the inner rich premixed flame remains more or less stable. The flickering frequency has been evaluated through image processing and fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the average pixel intensity of the image frames. It is observed that, for all the fuel combinations, the frequency decreases with the increase in the outer equivalence ratio, while it is relatively invariant with the change in the inner equivalence ratio. However, an increase in the inner equivalence ratio affects the structure of the flame by increasing the heights of the inner premixed flame and non-premixed flame and also enlarges the yellow soot-laden zone at the tip of the inner flame. A scaling analysis of the oscillating flames has been performed based on the measured parameters, which show a variation of Strouhal number (St) with Richardson number (Ri) as St ∝ Ri 0.5. The fuel type is found to have no influence on this correlation.

An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the distribution of intermediate hydroc... more An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the distribution of intermediate hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H2, C2H4 and C2H6) and soot in propane/air triple flames at different inner and outer equivalence ratios. The flames are established on an axisymmetric, coflowing burner. A rich mixture of propane and air flows through the inner port of the burner, whereas a lean mixture flows through the annular port surrounding the central jet. The concentrations of hydrocarbons at different locations in the flames are measured with gas chromatography and the soot volume fractions are measured using a thermocouple particle densitometry (TPD) method. The flame structures have been described using the visual images of the flames as well as with the distributions of fuel (C3H8) and CO2 concentrations and temperature across the flames. The peak concentrations of the intermediate hydrocarbons are observed at the inner premixed flame location, which decay down rapidly also at the inner flame. ...

Heat transfer and flow due to natural convection in air around heated equilateral triangular cyli... more Heat transfer and flow due to natural convection in air around heated equilateral triangular cylinders of different sizes inside a square enclosure has been analyzed. The triangular cylinder is at higher temperature and the vertical walls of the enclosure are at lower temperature with insulated horizontal walls. The computational model is developed using Ansys Fluent 13 commercial CFD package. The Rayleigh number is varied from 10 4 to 10 6. For a given size of enclosure, cylinders of different size are taken corresponding to aspect ratios of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. Results are presented in the form of contours of isotherm and stream function.
