The multitude of anatomical elements in a small space with a specific function makes this region very demanding for the diagnosis and treatment of pathological entities. Extensive tumors of this region are a special diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Surgical treatment includes rhinotomy, sinusotomy, orbitotomy, frontectomy, and other types of operations. In the case of skull base extension, the situation becomes more complicated, which leads to the need for the cooperation of several specialists and modification of the surgical technique. A special problem in this region is adequate reconstruction. More specialists perform surgical procedures in these regions. These include maxillofacial surgeons, ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists, neurosurgeons, oncological surgeons, and ophthalmologists.

In the male patient 84 years of age, bleeding planocellular lateral lip cancer was diagnosed. After the surgical excision of planocellular cancer, postresectional lip defect was 52 mm long and 32 mm high. Advancement V-Y island neurovascular muscle-cutaneous flap, nourished and innervated by a. and n. mentalis was used in lip reconstruction. The remnants of the orbicularis oris muscle, as well as the depressor anguli oris muscle and depressor labii inferioris muscle with their motor branches of the facial nerve were used for the orbicular sphincter reconstruction. The vermilion was reconstructed by the local mucosal flap. The patient was discharged after seven days with completely vital V-Y island neurovascular muscle-cutaneous flap for home care.

Osnovu patofiziološkog procesa ove vrste tumora predstavlja zamena normalnog koštanog tkiva fibroznim tkivom. Cemento-osificirajući fibrom (COF) pripada ovoj grupi tumora.

A comparative analysis of the models (child and adult) with and without brace has been carried out due to different morphological and tissue characteristics of child’s and adult’s head. The 3D realistic models of the child’s and adult’s head, with the jaw having the orthodontic brace, have been designed. The shapes and features of the child and adult head model, as well as the distance between the electromagnetic source and the exposed object, have an important role in the evaluation of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The applied procedure is based on the numerical solution of the electromagnetic waves propagation equations. The numerical analysis has been performed at the frequency of 3G (0.9GHz). The obtained results are represented within the teeth positioned on the side of the electromagnetic radi...

The study included ten adult mongrel dogs 5 years of age, weighing between 50 and 70 pounds (25-30 kg), divided into 2 groups of 5 dogs each. In both groups, the maxillary 4th premolar and 1st molar were removed after the elevation of a buccal mucoperiosteal flap. The alveolar bone adjacent to the extracted teeth was also removed. In the experimental group (5 dogs), Ionogran(R) a glass-ionomer microimplants (GIMIs) (Ionogran(R) particle size of 0.5-1.0 mm, IONOS Medizinische Produkte GmbH & Co. KG, D-8031 Seefeld, Gemany) were used for augmentation and were inserted in the created defects. The extraction sockets and bone defects were augmented with an average amount of 2 g of GIMIs. In the control group, the bone defects were left unfilled as a control for bone healing. Histological examination showed that the glass-ionomer microimplants were extremely osteoconductive and inert materials. Stimulation of growth of new bone tissue in contact with the glassionomer microimplants was evident. No inflammatory cells were detected on or adjacent to the GIMIs. In the control group, incomplete bone healing with fibrous scar tissue and inflammatory cells was noted. These results indicate that glass-ionomer microimplants represent highly osteoconductive and biocompatible materials for use in bone surgery. (

Intraosseous schwannoma of the jaw is rare. Primary schwannoma of the mandible presenting as a periapical radiolucency on a non-vital endodontically treated tooth has rarely been referred to in the English medical literature. A rare case of intraosseous schwannoma is reported in a 23-year-old woman. The patient presented clinically with a painful swelling on the right side of the mandible and with a radiologically ill-defined unilocular periapical lesion around the mesial root of the endodontically treated first molar. Surgical treatment involved complete excision of the lesion with a mesial and distal root resection. Histological and immunohistochemical examination showed that the lesion was a primary intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible. Immunohistochemical examination showed a positive and strong reaction for S-100 protein, characteristic of neural tumours. 1 year following surgery, there were no regional recurrences. Radiographically, mandibular intraosseous schwannoma is difficult to differentiate from bone tumours such as ameloblastoma, myxoma, fibrous dysplasia, neurofibroma, central giant cell lesion or periapical lesion, so it should be included in the list of possible periapical pathoses.

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts of the orbit belong to choristomas, tumours that originate from the aberrant primordial tissue. Clinically, they manifest as cystic movable formations mostly localized in the upper temporal quadrant of the orbit. They are described as both superficial and deep formations with most frequently slow intermittent growth. Apart from aesthetic effects, during their growth, dermoid and epidermoid cysts can cause disturbances in the eye motility, and in rare cases, also an optical nerve compression syndrome. Case Outline. In this paper, we described a child with a congenital orbital dermoid cyst localized in the upper-nasal quadrant that was showing signs of a gradual enlargement and progression. The computerized tomography revealed a cyst of 1.5-2.0 cm in size. At the Maxillofacial Surgery Hospital in Nis, the dermoid cyst was extirpated in toto after orbitotomy performed by superciliary approach. Postoperative course was uneventful, without infla...

Extracranial localization of meningeomas could appear due to their extracranial origin or due to the spreading of intracranial meningeomas. In this paper, we present our 15 years' experience in the diagnosis and treatment of extra- and intracranial meningiomas invading the head-and-neck region. In the period from 2001 to 2016 at our clinic, there were five patients (three men and two women), with meningiomas of extracranial origin or meningiomas of intracranial origin, spreading into the head-and-neck region. All patients were surgically treated, with the addition of adjuvant radiation therapy in some of the cases. Postoperative and postirradiation complications were described as well.

The initial phase of tumor development is characterized by asymptomatic growth, followed by the presence of pain and paresthesia in the later stage. We report the case of a 43-year-old female patient who contacted a doctor because of periodic pains and stupor in the left side of the upper jaw. The exostosis-like formation was found by palpation, subsequently raising suspicion of an odontogenic tumor on the basis of panoramic imaging (dental orthopan). The intraosseous lipoma was histopathologically diagnosed after surgical procedure and standardized treatment of removed tumefaction. Clinical features and x-ray findings of the intraosseous lipoma within the maxillary region are generally blurred. Surgery is the recommended treatment, and histopathology analysis is of utmost importance for the final diagnosis.
