A phase analysis of the as-processed tape conductors was performed and indicated that aqueous precipitates are formed in the tapes exposed to aerated water solution. The nominal composition of the precipitates was found to be Sr1-xCaxCuO2 (x0.4). This phase is present in the tapes before the corrosive damage ensues. In order to evaluate the stability properties of the Sr0.6Ca0.4CuO2 phase in a water environment, the pure compound was synthesized and treated under the same conditions as the tapes. Studies reveal that similar corrosion occurs in the Sr0.6Ca0.4CuO2 phase. Thus, the presence of this impurity phase, which appears upon heat treatment of the tape assemblies, is found to be an important factor in the degradation behaviour of the Bi-2212 tape conductors.

Hence a good understanding of the breakdown characteristics of this medium under a variety of practical electrode geometries and conditions is needed for design of high voltage equipment. While there is considerable literature on breakdown of LN2 gaps for uniform (plane-plane) or quasi-uniform electric fields (sphere-plane), there is much less data available for highly non-uniform field gaps and for surface flashover along insulators. In this paper we present results on sphere-plane and cylindrical rod-plane gaps in LN2 as a function of sphere and rod diameters and radius of the rod edge at 1 bar pressure. In addition the surface flashover voltages of Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) in LN2 with these electrode arrangements will also be reported

The samples were characterized using XRD, Rutherford backscattering, SEM, dynamic impedance, and four-point resistivity probe. The results were used to formulate a model for the underlying mechanics of film growth on polycrystalline silver substrates.

The challenges of use in various coil constructions and applications are discussed. Several applications where the conductor is subjected to high stress levels include high field insert coils and rotating machinery. While these applications present different challenges, the ability of the conductor to operate under high stress levels has been demonstrated in both direct sample measurement and test coils. The high winding current density that is available with SuperPower's thin 2G HTS wire was utilized in a high field insert coil demonstration generating central fields in excess of 26.8 T [1]. The ability of the wire to be tailored (stabilization, insulation, ac losses) to fit various operating parameters will also be discussed.

SuperPower, Inc. developed an industrial-scale, high-throughput IBAD-MgO based process for textured buffer and an MOCVD process for RE-123 coating, and has successfully fabricated wires up to 1.5 kilometer in length for these applications. A number of prototype devices incorporating SuperPower's products have demonstrated excellent performance, and there is an increasing demand for 2G HTS wire. Standardizing manufacturing processes and implementing constant improvements in productivity and reduced variation, SuperPower is routinely producing high quality, long length wire to meet the current and future market demands. Meanwhile, we maintain a strong R&D focus to further the development of high performance wires, high efficiency processes and advanced conductor architectures to address future needs of 2G HTS technology. Our latest progress in those areas will be reported.

The sample is conductively coupled to the cold stage so as to minimize vibration and thermal stresses. AC losses have been measured calorimetrically in several high-temperature superconductor coils that have been wound to simulate subscale transformer winding pairs. Stable temperatures down to 20 K were reached on these coils, allowing measurements at practical levels of AC current and Ic. By using short AC current pulses, losses on individual turns could be resolved. Results are reported mainly to showcase the apparatus, measurement procedure, and analytical approach

The development of superconducting systems for electric power is driven by the promise of improve... more The development of superconducting systems for electric power is driven by the promise of improved efficiency, smaller size, and reduced weight as compared to existing technologies and by the possibility of new applications. Superconducting power components can also contribute to improved power quality and increased system reliability. This paper addresses historical developments and technology status of four superconducting power applications: cables, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), fault-current limiters, and transformers. Today, SMES is the only fully functional superconducting system and it has seen only limited use at grid power levels. A few model or demonstration units exist for each of the other three applications. Superconductivity faces several hurdles on the path to widespread use. Perhaps the most important is the need for operating voltages of 100 kV or more. Though progress in this and other areas has been rapid, considerable development is needed before superconducting devices perform reliably in the utility environment. As a result, today, most initial installations are aimed at niche applications and will be installed where space is limited, where power demands are increasing over existing corridors, and/or where initial development costs can be offset by enhanced power grid performance.
