Given the double nature of experiencing food as individual as well as shared experience and knowl... more Given the double nature of experiencing food as individual as well as shared experience and knowledge, the question is how to connect the observed variability of expressing such a sensory experience with a normalized requirement for developing (food) terminology. On the basis of descriptions of food experiences in actual practices involving the way food is consumed, evaluated and expressed by individuals – experts or not – in all their diversity, we propose to contribute cognitive (psychological and linguistic) expertise to terminology research. We analyze terms as cognitive units, defined within a psychological theory of natural categories as acts of meaning. In tracking the processes of terminological meaning construction in discourse we find intersubjective experience within the complex process of terminologization.

A previous article showed that the free categorization of "audified seismic signals" operated by listeners can be explained by various geophysical parameters. The present article confirms this result and shows that cognitive representations of listeners can be used as heuristics for the characterization of seismic signals. Free sorting tests are conducted with audified seismic signals, with the earthquake/seismometer relative location, playback audification speed, and earthquake magnitude as controlled variables. The analysis is built on partitions (categories) and verbal comments (categorization criteria). Participants from different backgrounds (acousticians or geoscientists) are contrasted in order to investigate the role of the participants' expertise. Sounds resulting from different earthquake/station distances or azimuths, crustal structure and topography along th...

Within a new paradigm of categorization which is currently being developed in cognitive research,... more Within a new paradigm of categorization which is currently being developed in cognitive research, one of the main phenomena which has to be taken into account, is typicality (representativeness, family resemblance…). The gradedness that it introduces into categorical structures entails reconsideration of the relationship between extension and intension within categorical structures as well as between them. This involves both technical aspects and theoretical considerations relating to the meaningfulness of mathematical models to explain cognitive structures. Our contribution bears on the use and the evaluation of different data analysis methods to get at the featural structure of non verbal concepts from their graded extensional representation. The case which is used is that of mental categories of roads and landscapes in order to illustrate the main concepts that mathematical models of cognitive structures must (and can) explain on formal, theoretical and practical levels.
