Structural synthesis of conceptual technical systems is a result of transformation from the funct... more Structural synthesis of conceptual technical systems is a result of transformation from the functional domain into the structural domain. To enable semi-automated synthesis of conceptual technical systems on the basis of physical laws basic schemata have been introduced. Basic schemata are complementary to physical laws and consist of four elementary structural elements (point, line, surface and volume). In the presented paper, we discuss the properties of structural elements for synthesis of conceptual technical systems and how they are used to support variant design. Engineers from different engineering domains were asked to generate conceptual technical systems on the basis of automatically generated chains of physical laws and on the basis of the complementary chains of basic schemata. It was shown that engineers with different educational background and experiences will generate different conceptual structures, although concepts operate on the basis of the same physical laws

In order to optimise the efficiency of turning manufacturing processes, the process has been analysed and fundamentally re-engineered. All data from production (operations, quantities, date, time duration of operations, etc.) are now located in ERP system. It provided the necessary condition for the establishment of a robust dynamic planning model. An update was required for the whole lifecycle of products and means of work. The paper presents the information support and an algorithm for a dynamic planning model, based on a genetic algorithm. Continuous data capturing and planning in real time are a breakthrough in the management of the process. Presented are a generalised dynamic planning model and a case example from the production of turned parts, which take account of the singularities of a real environment. Production capacities have to be linked up with the supply chain and customers. The presented dynamic planning model can be adapted to various types of production.

For this purpose, the most successful attempts have addressed the outstanding features of the genetic algorithms.Design/methodology/approachThis paper utilizes a direct index coding (DIC) in a way that the optimization algorithm can simultaneously integrate topology and size in a minimal length chromosome in order to seek the true optimum in an efficient and reasonable manner. Proper genetic operators are adopted for this special kind of encoding together with some modifications in the topological mutation aiming to improve the convergence of the algorithm.FindingsThe present DIC, has the following features: enforcing one‐to‐one correspondence between discrete genotype space and the problems' phenotype space; avoiding any out‐of‐bound parameter addressing and limiting the GA search only to necessary genotypes; reduction in the size of genotype search space to incr...

Besides the required functionality, the emotional value of the product also plays an important role in user satisfaction. One of the aspects that an interdisciplinary design team should consider while developing a new product is the users’ cross-cultural differences in emotional responses toward product elements. The objective of this study was to use the adjusted Kansei engineering methodology, named the Kansei cross-culture (KCUL) model, in order to discover the differences or similarities in emotional responses toward shapes and colors of diverse groups of participants. This study demonstrates this methodology on two groups of students, one from Central Europe and the other from South Asia (India). We presumed that the observed participants will have different associations toward certain shape and color samples, as well as that they will differ in the intensity of responses. The data were collected through Semantic differential questionnaires and the five-level Likert scale. The survey results were then analyzed using the Factor analysis, the Independent t-test, and the Linear mixed models.

Significant parameters and their mutual effects in scanning process are recognized with the help of Design of Experiments (DOE) principles, and in second step recognized significant parameters are also optimized using the RSM (Response Surface Methodology). Back propagated neural network is used for prediction of response factors whose input variables are not possible to set during experimentation due to the nature of the scan device. With neural network (NN) predicted response-design data, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was performed. On a basis of significant parameters the analytical model is established, which enables prediction and optimization of critical scan parameters, according to the prescribed standard deviation (abberation) of analysed 3D CAD models. After getting knowledge about the relationship...

For this reason, our company has taken a more systematic approach. The prescriptive model of searching for changes has been used. The use of the model on the mechanism M75 has shown that the model is also suitable for companies with limited R&D human resources. It also has a positive effect on the creativeness of the process of searching for changes. Its deficiency lies in the fact that decomposition does not keep the relations between the parts. Searching and assessing the changes proved the main problem. The proposed changes should contribute to a better competitiveness of the product on the market.

Literature study has shown that the most researched and cited are the industry-university-government relations, presented in the Triple Helix model of institutional relations within new product development (NPD). Based on a case study of the Academic Virtual Enterprise, we have put the sole input of these institutions in NPD into question. We have tested and supported the claim that the user and the society are equal partners in the product innovation process. We have put forward the Fourfold Helix model that features a new formation of institutional relations where special focus is placed on the involvement of the user and the society in NPD.

Only 10% of launched new products are successful. How can we increase successfulness of new products? We have developed a special method for identifying opportunities for new products. A new product can mean improvements of existing products, radical innovations or services. The method is suitable for small as well as big companies. We defined social, economic, technological and legislative factors which help us to recognize opportunities while taking into account company characteristics. The method presents more systematic approach to opportunity identification process.

This leads to the merging of geographically, organizationally and culturally heterogeneous human resources, including product developers. Market and organizational changes, the integrated product development process, and available information and communication technologies (ICT), present a number of challenges for future product developers. An appropriate response to these challenges is to create a solid basis for strategies to combat stronger competition, since existing educational programmes have provided this only to a small extent. European-Global Product Realization (E-GPR) course is one of possible educational programmes; the paper presents some experiences based on running the course.

Scanning distance and scanning angle of impact laser beam was found to be the most crucial interaction between the surface topology and scanning process. Therefore, we focused these two parameters while other parameters like microstructure, colour of surface, optical settings remained fixed. Despite of random nature of freeform surfaces, the measurements were systematic, according to the principles of the design of experiment (DOE) adjusting angle and distance in the whole scanning range. Based on the results of this research and prior estimation of surface complexity, an implication or working area range prediction, as well as the determination of optimal set of influence parameters inside this particular working area can be done.
