Research paper thumbnail of Analyses of Electric and Flow Fields in Charge Injection Type of Electrostatic Oil Filter

Proceedings of the JFPS International Symposium on Fluid Power, 2008

This paper presents experimental and numerical simulation results of the electric and flow fields... more This paper presents experimental and numerical simulation results of the electric and flow fields in a charge injection type of electrostatic oil filter. A previous work has shown that flow is generated from the tips of the projections of the emitter electrode towards the smooth electrodes because of ion drag phenomenon and that the flow may detach part of the contaminant particles captured on the smooth electrodes and may be the principal cause of the saturation of the filtration speed at higher applied voltages and oil temperatures. In order to minimize the bad influence of the ion drag flow on the filter performance, it is important to be able to predict the flow in filters of various configurations by numerical simulation. Experimental results of the flow field are compared to numerical simulation results. In addition, electric potential distribution is measured and is compared between experiment and simulation. It is shown that the magnitude of the ion drag flow is increased with increasing applied voltage, is decreased with decreasing electrode spacing and is larger for negative charge injection than for positive charge injection. Similar results can be obtained by numerical simulations but the improvement of simulation accuracy is necessary.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of clients and their carers regarding palliative care services in New South Wales, Austalia. Ten patients and their carers (n = 7) were randomly selected from a sample of palliative care clients and were informed of the study and interviewed. Interview data were coded independently by three researchers and thematic analysis was undertaken. The themes identified were similar for both clients and carers and included: access to services; service provision; impact on way of life; usefulness of services; and staffing. An additional theme identified by clients was the burden of caregiving on carers. Knowledge of perceptions and concerns of client and carers is important to consider when planning palliative care services.

Research paper thumbnail of Probability distribution for energy of saturated broadband ocean acoustic transmission: Results from Gulf of Maine 2006 experiment

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012

The probability distribution of ocean-acoustic broadband signal energy after saturated multipath ... more The probability distribution of ocean-acoustic broadband signal energy after saturated multipath propagation is derived using coherence theory. The frequency components obtained from Fourier decomposition of a broadband signal are each assumed to be fully saturated with energy spectral density that obey the exponential distribution with 5.6 dB standard deviation and unity scintillation index. When the signal bandwidth and measurement time are larger than the correlation bandwidth and correlation time, respectively, of its energy spectral density components, the broadband signal energy obtained by integrating the energy spectral density across the signal bandwidth then follows the Gamma distribution with a standard deviation smaller than 5.6 dB and a scintillation index less than unity. The theory is verified with broadband transmissions in the Gulf of Maine shallow water waveguide in the 300 to 1200 Hz frequency range. The standard deviations of received broadband signal energies range from 2.7 to 4.6 dB for effective bandwidths up to 42 Hz, while the standard deviations of individual energy spectral density components are roughly 5.6 dB. The energy spectral density correlation bandwidths of the received broadband signals are found to be larger for signals with higher center frequencies and are roughly 10% of each center frequency.

Material and Methods-A search was made for articles published in English, from 1946-2012, which compared PMPE vs. full mouth periodontal examination (FMPE) protocols for CAL or PD ≥ 4mm or REC ≥ 3mm thresholds. PMPE protocols were evaluated for sensitivity of estimates of periodontitis prevalence, relative biases for severity and extent estimates. Results-A review of the literature identified 12 studies which reported 32 PMPE protocols. Three PMPE protocols which had sensitivities ≥ 85% and relative biases ≤ 0.05 in absolute values for severity and extent estimates were: 1) half mouth six-sites, 2) diagonal quadrants six-sites and 3) full mouth mesiobuccal-midbuccal-distobuccal (MB-B-DB). Two other PMPE protocols (full mouth and half mouth mesiobuccal-midbuccal-distolingual) performed well for prevalence and severity of periodontitis; however, their performance in estimates of extent was unknown. Conclusions-Among the 32 PMPE protocols listed, the half-mouth six-sites and full-mouth MB-B-DB protocols had the highest sensitivities for prevalence estimates and lowest relative biases for severity and extent estimates.

Research paper thumbnail of Composite Energy Storage System Involving Battery and Ultracapacitor With Dynamic Energy Management in Microgrid Applications

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2011

Renewable-energy-based microgrids are a better way of utilizing renewable power and reduce the us... more Renewable-energy-based microgrids are a better way of utilizing renewable power and reduce the usage of fossil fuels. Usage of energy storage becomes mandatory when such microgrids are used to supply quality power to the loads. Microgrids have two modes of operation, namely, grid-connected and islanding modes. During islanding mode, the main responsibility of the storage is to perform energy balance. During grid-connected mode, the goal is to prevent propagation of the renewable source intermittency and load fluctuations to the grid. Energy storage of a single type cannot perform all these jobs efficiently in a renewable powered microgrid. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like photovoltaic (PV) demands usage of storage with high energy density. At the same time, quick fluctuation of load demands storage with high power density. This paper proposes a composite energy storage system (CESS) that contains both high energy density storage battery and high power density storage ultracapacitor to meet the aforementioned requirements. The proposed power converter configuration and the energy management scheme can actively distribute the power demand among the different energy storages. Results are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, a sensorless illumination control scheme for smart networked LED lighting has been investigated. The scheme is based on a feedforward neural network to model all the nonlinear and linear relationships inside the lighting system as the controlled plant. Because the scheme does not rely on lighting simulation software, it is flexible to be implemented on microcontrollers. The scheme, moreover, can provide not only high accuracy in modeling but also global optimum in energy saving. Without using light sensors in its control loop, the approach can save significant cost and provide ease of installation as well. In addition, it also has the strength of fast response owing to feedforward control based on neural networks. The experimental results show that the approach can easily attain more than 95% modeling accuracy and also improve more than 28% energy saving with its optimal nonlinear multiple-input multiple-output control.
