The key drivers of this change are the squeeze on public sector funding, new pricing structures and increased competition from new entrants. In addition the coalition government aims to change the relationship between government, citizens and civil society. Within this context the University of Northampton has put in place a very ambitious strategy which puts social enterprise at the centre of its development. The strategic development of the University comes at a time when people are asking questions about the societal role of Universities. This is a continuation of a debate that has been taking place over many years with an increasing emphasis being placed on employability, entrepreneurship and the need to develop new approaches and new business models; requiring an increasing collaboration between Universities, public, private and third sector organisations. The paper will explore the genesis of the strategy, its key components and the elements that were needed to change the University into a socially entrepreneurial University and the opportunity this provides for the University to become part of a socially innovative region.

Any intervention has to be aware of, and sensitive to, the aims of custodial parents. A group-based intervention aimed at helping children to be less vulnerable to both emotional problems and future abuse is described. The results of such groups suggest that future intervention needs to treat the panacea of increasing child-parent communication with some caution, and should instead recognize that children make their own choices about when to speak out and what to say within their own family situation. Intervention should instead be geared towards helping children to sort out their own feelings and letting them decide how they want to express them.

It makes particular reference to social enterprise.Design/methodology/approachThe paper explores the political and educational context which inspired this initiative and the theoretical basis for the approach used. A particular focus is placed on the entrepreneurial aspects of the development. It moves on to describe the delivery of the module to the first cohort of students and includes their assessment of the learning and an evaluation of how they performed the assessment task.FindingsStudents were very positive about the content of the module; the teaching style employed and reported that it had inspired them to be entrepreneurial.Practical implicationsStudents who are now paying large sums in fees may well be motivated to enrol on courses that are practice based or enhance professional...

This paper will focus on the development of a Social Venture Builder (SVB) programme at the University of Northampton; an example of a course that aims to develop the skills of the innovators and entrepreneurs whilst at the same time developing sustainable social ventures. We will place this in a wider context of the University of Northampton’s institution wide strategy around social enterprise and how this is developing from one that concentrates on developing social enterprises to a more embedded strategy that develops creative and socially entrepreneurial students. Ultimately, as a University we believe we have to dev...
