The growing utilization of nonlinear loads such as rectifiers considerably distorts the shape of current and voltage signals affecting the power quality of the grid. Therefore, harmonic estimation and compensation are important tasks for improving power quality indexes in electric systems. In this work, the feasibility of using the discrete Fourier square-wave transform (DFSWT) as a fast processing engine, with low power consumption, for online harmonic component estimation is assessed. From obtained results, the current harmonic components demanded by the nonlinear loads were properly identified through DFSWT and compensated utilizing a shunt active power filter (S-APF) in all treated cases, obtaining a well-shaped sinusoidal current signal in the grid front-end.

The method exploits the parallelism and high speed characteristics of the FPGA. Different fixed-point representation of the external and internal signal is used. The emulator architecture is presented as well as peripheral units implemented along with the main unit. The real-time emulator is evaluated by experimentation under start-up and varaible load torque conditions. This emulator is the based to implement algorithms like speed and flux estimators, i. e. Extended Kalman Filter, Luenberguer-like observer, etc., and several control schemes like Direct Torque Control, Field-Oriented Control, etc. for induction motors.

A faulty motor produces interruptions on production lines, with consequences in cost, product quality, and safety. The relevance in induction motor monitoring is the ability to detect faults in incipient state. Many proposed methods consider direct connection of motors to the power supply; however, the common practice in industry is to connect them through variable speed drives (VSD), which introduce harmonics into the current supply signal that make the fault identification extremely difficult. This work proposes a statistical analysis through mean, variance, and information entropy computation, combined with sensorless rotating speed estimation for classifying different faults in induction motors using an artificial neural network. The proposed methodology examines the voltage and current signals provided by an industrial VSD that ensures a high certainty on identifying the treated faults at different rotational speed. A field programmable gate array-based implementation is developed to offer an online, system-on-chip solution for real-time condition monitoring. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Smart sensors are an approach to increase performance and overcome costs in monitoring systems. This work presents preliminary results on the implementation of a smart sensor for electrical machine monitoring integrated as a low-cost SoC. The proposed smart sensor is based on a reconfigurable hardware architecture implemented into a field programmable gate array. It extracts statistics like mean, variance, information entropy, and the distribution histogram from the acquired signal. It can work as a standalone system, showing obtained results on a VGA screen or LCD, or streaming out obtained results for further processing. Two study cases demonstrate its effectiveness during electrical machine monitoring: Detection of time-dependent harmonic effects on the voltage signal provided by a VSD. Identification of broken bars and unbalance in induction motors.

The spectral analysis identifies the fault signature modifying the sample frequency in the data acquisition system. The wavelet analysis maintains a constant sample frequency using MRA, which provides redundant information to identify the faults. Furthermore, the MRA analysis of ISP stator currents helps to identify small incipient faults choosing a threshold between the healthy and faulty machine. The cases considered are stator and rotor electric faults, which are modeled by means of parametric variations. In Spite of its simplicity, the model provides useful information for fault identification.

In this context, interferometer-based displacement measurements have become the main tools used for traceable dimensional metrology. The different industrial applications in which small displacement measurements are employed requires the use of online measurements, high speed processes, open architecture control systems, as well as good adaptability to specific process conditions. The main contribution of this work is the development of a smart sensor for large displacement measurement based on phase measurement which achieves high accuracy and resolution, designed to be used with a commercial heterodyne interferometer. The system is based on a low-cost Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) allowing the integration of several functions in a single portable device. This system is optimal for high speed applications where online measurement is needed and the reconfigurability feature allows the addition of different modules for error compensation, as might be required by a specific application.

Real-world induction motors can have one or more faults present at the same time that can mislead to a wrong decision about its operational condition. The detection of multiple combined faults is a demanding task, difficult to accomplish even with computing intensive techniques. This work introduces information entropy and artificial neural networks for detecting multiple combined faults by analyzing the 3-axis startup vibration signals of the rotating machine. A field programmable gate array implementation is developed for automatic online detection of single and combined faults in real time.
