In this context, it is generally not feasible to adopt a direct approach, via ansätze for the fields to either side of the defect tuned to satisfy the defect sewing conditions. Rather, essential use is made of the fact that the defect sewing conditions themselves are intimately related to Bäcklund transformations in order to set up a strategy to enable the calculation of the field on one side by suitably transforming the field on the other side. The method is implemented using Darboux transformations and illustrated in detail for the sine-Gordon and KdV models. An exception, treatable by both methods, indirect and direct, is provided by the genus 1 solutions. These can be expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, which satisfy a number of useful identities of relevance to this problem. There are new features to the solutions obtained in the finite-gap context but, in all cases, if a (multi)soliton limit is taken within the finite-gap solutions previously known results are recovered.

It is shown, by examining low-spin conserved charges, that the boundary conditions preserving integrability are strongly constrained. In particular, among the cases treated so far, e 1

They axe polynomial in the canonical fields and generalize naturally the corresponding currents of the constituent Gross-Neveu and ordinary a-models.

The analysis of this class of solutions reveals the remarkably intricate structure of the construction.

It is found that generic collections of Feynman diagrams are responsible for the leading order poles in any of the theories. However, the complexity is such that it has not yet proved possible to analyse all the singularities that occur up to order twelve. Some comments are made on an associated tiling problem and on an interesting connection between the affine Toda couplings and the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition of tensor products .

The conventional model and the model of Neveu and Schwarz emerge as special cases. The requirement of the existence of an infinite set of gauge operators restricts the number of representations that

The Green function for a scalar field transforming as a vector under the group is shown to take an elegant form in the background field of the general self-dual solution. The massless solutions of the Dirac equation, for this representation of the group, are also explicitly exhibited.

Propagators for the boson and fermion fields restricted to a half-line contain several novel features and are developed as prerequisites for the calculations.
