One can identify metabolites characteristic of a particular disease. The compilation of a metabolic profile will facilitate the diagnosis of diseases, evaluate their stage and etiology, and predict treatment. The goal of the study is to analyze the metabolite composition of the ear-nose-throat (ENT) tissues by high-resolution THz spectroscopy based on nonstationary effects and compare metabolites formed during the thermal decomposition of relatively healthy mucosa, polyps, and cysts. Studies were performed with the spectrometers operating from 118 to 178 GHz. The chemical compounds were identified using online catalogs. In all samples, there are such substances as methanol, propanediol, acetaldehyde, acetonitrile, butyronitrile, methyl mercaptan, azole, ethylene sulfide, carbon sulfide, and sulfur dioxide. In the spectrum of relatively healthy mucosa, the number of absorption lines of these substances is ...

A THz nonstationary high-resolution spectrometer based on semiconductor superlattice multipliers ... more A THz nonstationary high-resolution spectrometer based on semiconductor superlattice multipliers is applied to investigate the dynamics of urine composition for cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. The molecular urine composition of healthy volunteers and cancer patients was compared and contrasted. We have found a set of nitriles that either appeared after chemotherapy or increased in content, which are expected as a result of bio-chemical damage to the liver. While no damage can be detected at this stage by existing clinical methods, the identified nitriles are candidates for further large-scale systematic testing towards markers for nephrotoxicity of chemotherapy at an early stage of the treatment, when conventional diagnostics cannot identify substantial organ damage. Comparing the metabolite concentration dynamics with side effects during chemotherapy might then help individuate patients prone to severe complications and correct the treatment. Our devices are game-changer...

Research paper thumbnail of High-Resolution Terahertz Spectroscopy for Investigation of Energetic Materials During Their Thermal Decomposition

IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, 2021

The possibilities of using high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy for studying the composition of... more The possibilities of using high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy for studying the composition of vapors of energy materials during their thermal decomposition were investigated. A high resolution nonstationary spectrometer for gas analysis based on the phase-shift of 115–178 GHz radiation acting on gas and a system heating the measuring cell and the reaction volume were developed and implemented. Possible mechanisms of thermal decomposition were found for four substances (ammonium nitrate, pentaerythritetetranitrate, octogen, triaminotrinitrobenzene) and sets of substances appearing during their thermolysis were determined experimentally. The results obtained show that high-resolution spectroscopy operating on nonstationary effects is a promising technique for qualitative analysis of multicomponent gas mixtures of the thermal decomposition products of explosives, including the appearance of products at different stages of sample heating. Besides the developed method can be used for...

Significance: The creation of fundamentally new approaches to storing various biomaterial and estimation parameters, without irreversible loss of any biomaterial, is a pressing challenge in clinical practice. We present a technology for studying samples of diabetic and non-diabetic human blood plasma in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. Aim: The main idea of our study is to propose a method for diagnosis and storing the samples of diabetic and non-diabetic human blood plasma and to study these samples in the THz frequency range. Approach: Venous blood from patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and conditionally healthy participants was collected. To limit the impact of water in the THz spectra, lyophilization of liquid samples and their pressing into a pellet were performed. These pellets were analyzed using THz time-domain spectroscopy. The differentiation between the THz spectral data was conducted using multivariate statistics to classify non-diabetic and diabetic g...

One of the modern trends in medical diagnostics is based on metabolomics, an approach allowing determination of metabolites which can be the specific features of disease. High-resolution gas spectroscopy allows investigation of the gas metabolite content of samples of biological origin. We present the elaboration of a method of studying diabetic and non-diabetic biological samples, prepared as pellets, by terahertz (THz) high-resolution spectroscopy. Aim: The main idea of the work is studying the content of thermal decomposition gas products of diabetic and non-diabetic dried blood plasma and kidney tissues for revealing the set of gas-markers that characterized the diabetes by the THz high-resolution spectroscopy method. Approach: We present an approach to study the diabetic and non-diabetic blood plasma (human and rats) and kidney tissues (rats), using high-resolution spectroscopy based on the non-stationary effect of THz frequency range. The methods of pre...

Tissue metabolites of the ear-nose-throat organs obtained during surgery according to strict medical indications have been studied for the first time in the world. All the tissues used in the samples were histological verified for confirming the morphological diagnosis. For obtaining a unified picture, chemical compounds appearing during thermal decomposition of pathological and relatively healthy tissues were identified using the spectroscopic approach, with mandatory histological verification of the samples. The obtained results demonstrate that a powerful research tool has been proposed for evaluation of metabolites in otorhinolaryngology with detection of diseases markers.

The great advantage of the phase switching spectrometer is a possibility of short time measurements, which is needed for pulsed molecular beam researches of organometallic molecules. Experimental researches of the phase-switching spectrometer demonstrate superior sensitivity and temporal resolution.

Thereby the development of fast non-invasive analytical methods, allowing the quantitative determination of volatile chemical compounds, that could be sign of food freshness or pathology, is needed. In this report the possibility of applying the high resolution THz spectroscopy for food quality control has been considered. The results reveal that odor of fresh meat contains ethil formate, diethyl ether, alanine and glycine, that disappear during natural decomposition process. The latter is characterized by uprise of sulfur compound such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. After that the decaying process is going on with ammonia and nitrogenous organic substances appearance (formamide, ethylamine). In the spoiled fish odor propylene glycol, urethane, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and nitriles substances have been found. The high resolution THz spectroscopy as “electronic nose” has been demonstrated to be very ...
