This analysis is particularly interesting because the results of dip measurements are used for calculation of severity levels and site indexes that are important parameters in the assessment of quality level of power supply but also for selecting equipment with proper intrinsic immunity. Anyway, instruments for dip measurement still have unresolved technical and theoretical issues related to the characterization of their metrological performance, so it can be found that different instruments are significantly in disagreement in some actual measurements. This paper moves a step into the direction of deepening the knowledge about the measurement of voltage dips, pointing out the limits because of the adoption of the detection algorithms adopted in agreement with standard. It starts with a discussion about parameters that characterize voltage dips. Then, the analytical calculations of systematic deviations in the event characterization, introduced by the most diffused dip detection algorithms, in simplified measurement situations, are presented, underlining their remarkable impact with particular attention to short-dip event. The obtained relations are experimentally verified on a commercial power quality instrument. Brief remarks about the analysis of the main algorithms, alternative to that of the standard, for voltage dip detection are also reported.

The monitoring of power quality (PQ) on supply networks is today an issue of worldwide interest. ... more The monitoring of power quality (PQ) on supply networks is today an issue of worldwide interest. In this field, one of the most important parameter is the flicker effect, a phenomenon due to luminance fluctuations of the lighting caused by voltage variations. The IEC standardized the implementation of a flickermeter, to supply information about the human reaction to the voltage amplitude modulation [1,2]. Starting from a different flicker measurement approach proposed by the authors [3], in this paper a low-cost smart flicker sensor has been designed and applied. The proposed sensor can transmit data over a TCP-IP network, in order to allow for a remote monitoring of power quality. The performance of the proposed device has been compared with a standard flickermeter and the main experiment results reported.

These electromagnetic disturbances can cover a large interval of frequencies and can be present in industrial, domestic as well as commercial systems. As the main negative effects we can mention the high order harmonics, voltage fluctuations, flicker and disturbances with high slew-rates. The monitoring of the PQ of supply networks is then an issue of worldwide interest. It is frequently indispensable to measure PQ indexes in wide electric power plant or in industrial zones. To this aim a low-cost smart Web sensor has been designed and implemented to acquire, process and transmit data over a 802.3 network. It is organized in a multi microcontrollers system: the first one dedicated to the data acquisition and the other to data processing, dynamic HTML pages construction and TCP/IP stack management. Key features of the realised device are low-cost, data processing and remote communication capabilities, the possibility to provide date with any Internet browser. In the paper the main steps of design, implementation and characterization of the proposed system are given.

The instrument is a 2-axis ultrasonic anemometer, capable of monitoring both wind speed and direction. Its main advantage is that using the ultrasonic technique it has no moving parts, allowing for the utilization in a variety of applications requiring low maintenance and fast response to rapid wind gusts. Wind speed measurement for power turbine control can be considered as a reference application of it. The proposed instrument presents a simple design and is constructed using commercially available components, to reduce development costs. In the paper the proposed architecture is presented, discussing the algorithm applied to process the transduced ultrasonic signals. Some results obtained during the first tests are also presented and discussed, suggesting for successive improvements.

Harmonic distortion, noise, transients, over-voltages and voltage dips have increased the difficulty in achieving accurate measurements. Besides, many of non-active power component definitions that have been proposed cannot be implemented in the traditional electro-mechanical or solid-state meters. This paper goes on to investigate about the possibility to process the instantaneous power signal when harmonics are likely to occur. The intent is not to resolve theoretical controversies, but instead to investigate about the possibility to easily process the instantaneous power signal in order to reduce the meter cost. Specifically, in the paper the measurement of a power parameter A*, which is sensible to the harmonic interferences with the fundamental component of the instantaneous power, is proposed. This parameter can be adopted for the development of a simplified single-phase electric energy meter able to operate in non sinusoidal conditions and to supply distortion information. Additionally, some simulation results are proposed, to confirm the applicability of the proposed measurement technique.

To increase the quality of the resin casting process, a research cooperation between the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering and Economics of the University of L'Aquila and the Bticino Legrand group has been started, with the main aim of developing a non- invasive and reliable measurement procedure, for a fast characterization and the identification of possible nonconformity for cast resin windings. The proposed procedure is based on the SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis), with some improvements for the correct evaluation of the correlation coefficients among different SFRA profiles. In this paper, the experimental results that have been obtained by applying the SFRA to windings of different sizes are presented, and some faults have been investigated.

ABSTRACT The light flicker effect is one of the most complex phenomena in the power quality field... more ABSTRACT The light flicker effect is one of the most complex phenomena in the power quality field. It involves voltage fluctuation shape, lamp behavior, and eye-brain activity. As a first approach, the cause of light flicker was modeled in terms of voltage amplitude modulations, with a rectangular or sinusoidal shape. This is the main reason these modulated voltage waveforms have been adopted to evaluate the performance of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) light flicker meter. Unfortunately, in realistic conditions, the observed voltage fluctuations have usually more complex shapes; therefore, it might happen that two IEC flicker meters give different measurement results for the same voltage input, depending on the different implementation. In this paper, we are mostly concerned with the synthesis of an automatic test system for the evaluation of the IEC light flicker meter performance and the measurement of the short-time severity index ( Pst ) with a standard IEC flicker meter when a wide set of complex modulating shapes is applied to the voltage. Part of them has been implemented by adopting the parameters suggested by the international organizations; starting from the obtained results, some new modulating shapes are proposed and tested.
