Christianity’s reality in the global south where poverty, climate change, ecological degradation ... more Christianity’s reality in the global south where poverty, climate change, ecological degradation and marginalization are the daily, lived experience of the majority of the world’s population, presents theologians with a unique moment of challenge and opportunity for theological exploration, experimentation, and missiological innovation. This article explores and analyzes one such experiment, the Bethany Land Institute (BLI, https://bethanylandinstitute.org/) in Uganda. Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, BLI promotes the concept and practice of integral ecology as a lens for missiological reflection. The article argues that integral ecology, as pursued at BLI, invites us to rethink the traditional themes of Christian mission such as conversion, love, spirituality, and ecclesiology. It also provides a new model of doing theology, one that is particularly appropriate in an era marked by World Christianity, and by the global ecological crisis.

What is often ignores is that the AIDS epidemic is changing the kind of people we are. It has reinforced both Western stereotypes of Africa, and African suspicion of the West, and of the West's intentions in Africa.

It argues that in. order to uncover the complexity and contradictions within African Christianity as well as the challenges fa~ing African Christians in the twenty-first century, theqlogical reflectio.n must both be grounded in, and reflect, the concrete life of Christian communities in Africa. The theological contributions of Bediako and Mugambi respectively are explored as representatives of dominant trends of theological reflection in Africa, with a view to showing that at the root of their methodological limitations is a failure to invoke a fully embodied account of the church. Accordingly, their work fails either to uncover the social-material challenges facing African Christians, or to provide sufficient theological resources to help African Christians meet these challenges. The reality of political violence in Africa poses a major theological challenge. There is no more... more The reality of political violence in Africa poses a major theological challenge. There is no more pressing challenge for New Evangelization (NE) in Africa than the search for a different, nonviolent basis for social existence in Africa. The essay argues that for NE to meet this challenge it will have to move beyond the trap of “culture” and engage more explicitly the political vision of the gospel. The story of Archbishop Emmanuel Kataliko’s life and work exemplifies what this concretely looks like. Accordingly Kataliko’s story confirms that, pursued under the aegis of reconciliation, NE cannot but become deeply political in that it seeks nothing short of a new vision of society in Africa grounded in the story of God’s nonviolent and reconciling love.
