This paper proposes a new mathematical model to evaluate the effects of artificial feeding on bee... more This paper proposes a new mathematical model to evaluate the effects of artificial feeding on bee colony population dynamics. The proposed model is based on a classical framework and contains differential equations that describe the changes in the number of hive bees, forager bees, and brood cells, as a function of amounts of natural and artificial food. The model includes the following elements to characterize the artificial feeding scenario: a function to model the preference of the bees for natural food over artificial food; parameters to quantify the quality and palatability of artificial diets; a function to account for the efficiency of the foragers in gathering food under different environmental conditions; and a function to represent different approaches used by the beekeeper to feed the hive with artificial food. Simulated results are presented to illustrate the main characteristics of the model and its behavior under different scenarios. The model results are validated with experimental data from the literature involving four different artificial diets. A good match between simulated and experimental results was achieved.

Agaricus blazei Murill, most recently referred as Agaricus subrufescens is a fungus that belongs ... more Agaricus blazei Murill, most recently referred as Agaricus subrufescens is a fungus that belongs to the Brazilian diversity and, considered as an important producer of bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. Studies have demonstrated that these compounds present immunomodulatory, antioxidant and antitumor properties. However, there is little information about the appropriate methodology for obtaining extracts with biological activities and their possible citotoxicity. The mushroom extracts were evaluated by cytotoxicity assays using primary cultures of granulocytes and macrophages colony forming cells (CFU-GM) and established V79 cell line. Lipoperoxidation analysis using fibroblast V79 cells were also conducted. The extract fraction that produced a crystalline product was obtained from the alcoholic extraction at 60°C. This fraction exhibited an antioxidant activity on mitochondrial membranes and did not present cytotoxic activity on concentrations lower than 2.5 mg/mL in both cells systems evaluated CFU-GM and V79. Moreover, no significant alterations on the fibroblast V79 adhesion or proliferation capacity was observed. We suggest that the alcoholic fraction obtained from A. subrufescens at 60°C has a great potential for biotechnological application since it is easily obtained and presented low cytotoxicity potential.

O tratamento biologico de efluentes e um processo promissor para a reducao do impacto ambiental o... more O tratamento biologico de efluentes e um processo promissor para a reducao do impacto ambiental ocasionado pela liberacao dos efluentes as industrias papeleiras. Duas cepas de fungos, Lentinula (=Lentinus) edodes UEC-2019 e UEC-2021, previamente selecionadas para este fim, foram empregadas. O objetivo primordial deste estudo foi a determinacao das condicoes otimas para o tratamento de efluentes da industria papeleira com L. .edodes em um modelo modificado de bioreator do tipo "air-lift" - leito recheado. Estudaram-se as condicoes mais adequadas para producao de lignina peroxidase (LiP) e manganes peroxidase (MnP), L. edodes em sistemas livres e imobilizados a nivel de Erlenmeyer e em bioreator com efluentes organoclorados de naturezas diferentes. O ultimo parâmetro a ser estudado foi o coeficiente de transferencia de oxigenio (?K IND. L?a) em sistemas livres e imobilizados nas vazoes de ar de 400, 600 e 800 mL/min, o qual e um dado essencial no planejamento de bioreatores para tratamentos aerobios. Os resultados demonstraram que as melhores condicoes para a producao enzimatica foram meio liquido extrato de malte 1.25%, sem fonte adicional de carbono ou nitrogenio e crescimento micelial livre.
