This article seeks to reflect the process of teaching and learning in the field of mathematical f... more This article seeks to reflect the process of teaching and learning in the field of mathematical finance at the Colombian Institute of Learning (INCAP), designing a proposal for teaching strategies to enhance meaningful learning, academic achievement and reduce the dropout rate of students, also it serves other institutions to present a similar problem exposed in the investigation. The methodology used is a mixed method with concurrent triangulation in qualitative research takes place in a classroom by a focus group and observation of the researcher, and quantitative surveys of students and teachers of the subject. With triangulation surveys, focus group research and observation of the main causes of the problem are determined to select teaching strategies to help mitigate the problem. En este artículo se presentan los principales resultados de una investigación sobre la caracterización de la Vivienda de Interés Básica, Social y Económica urbana en Puebla, con referencia a los materiales y las tecnologías constructivas. Los objetivos que se persiguen están dirigidos al mejor conocimiento de dos de los factores que más inciden en su comportamiento físico, y la posibilidad de evaluar la dependencia o interrelación que tienen con la vida útil del producto que se obtiene: Vivienda de Interés Básica, Social y Económica (VIBSE). Los autores de este trabajo han desarrollado investigaciones en que han podido comprobar que los materiales y las soluciones constructivas, constituyen dos de los elementos más importantes en la generación de patologías en el contexto de Puebla. Los elementos o variables objetos de caracterización fueron definidos a partir de los criterios de diferentes autores y sobre todo, de los resultados de una encuesta muestral. La definición de los prototipos o tipologías que puedan ser representativos del universo de la VIBSE en Puebla, persigue el objetivo de poder profundizar en su caracterización y, en futuros estudios sobre los procesos patológicos que en él ocurren, poder determinar con mayor precisión las causas de las manifestaciones patológicas. This paper presents the main results from a research on the characterization of Low-Income, Basic and Economic urban Housing in Puebla, in relation to construction materials and technologies. The objectives are aimed to a better awareness of two of the factors that have the greatest impact on its physical behavior, and the possibility of evaluating the dependence or interrelation with the lifespan of the product supplied: Economic, Basic and Low-Income Housing (Vivienda de Interés Básica, Social y Económica-VIBSE). The authors of this paper developed research projects where they have been able to verify that materials and construction solutions are two of the most important factors in the generation of diseases in Puebla. The elements or variables of this characterization were defined based on criteria from different authors, and especially, from the results of a sampling survey. The objective of defining the prototypes or typologies that may be representative of the VIBSE universe have the purpose of a deeper exploration of their characterization, and in future studies on the pathologic processes it presents, and to be able to determine more precisely the causes of pathologies.

This project pretends to create a platform to manage and recycle data. It means that we are going... more This project pretends to create a platform to manage and recycle data. It means that we are going to treat a platform that will manage the data for a client, and at the same time this platform will recycle the data for the purpose that a huge group of people re-use it, for example in studies or investigations. The open data won't have confidential information and its realization will be massively. As an example about our platform, we are going to realize an application with the collaboration of the ''Hospital de Bellvitge''. This application will help us to capture the data to calculate the risk of bleeding and the risk of reinfarction of a patient, to get this we will need medical reports of the hospital. The treatment of the information is private but we are going to re-use all the data to generate open statistics, then we will see the attributes that affects in the risk of the formulas. The statistics will be done in a massively form and it will be free of confidential information about the patient and the hospital. In addition we are going to know a technology that will help us in the development of webs and will give us a lot of management options. I'm talking about Drupal, a tool that every day is more used.

The radio sector in Peru represents one of the most important media in the country due to its imm... more The radio sector in Peru represents one of the most important media in the country due to its immediacy and for having the most coverage in nation. Many people listen to the radio, so it is therefore a means to integrate diverse and remote areas of the country. In recent however years, its participation in the media communications sector has dropped due technological developments that have caused growth in other media like TV and internet. In addition, radio hasn't generated new and creative programming, which can gain popular appeal, like those in international radios that have improved the radio and became the first in line, the BBC-London is an example of this. According the publishing of the "Consejo Consultivo de Radio y Television" of 2011 and 2012, there are 5 business groups in the radio sector which together account for 80% of the market in Peru. Through the execution of this strategic plan, it is hoped to achieve de proposed objective for the year 2020, when Peruvian radio industry will be recognized as the leading media communications sector, attaining national coverage and characterized by high cultural and educational content, with strict ethical and social responsibility. This is possible by using multimodal media, steadily contributing to the educational development of Peru. En este artículo recurrimos a la cura mental del norteamericano Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-18... more En este artículo recurrimos a la cura mental del norteamericano Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866) como ejemplo de práctica psicológica informal que, siendo previa a la psicoterapia formal moderna, contribuyó a establecer las condiciones de posibilidad para que esta última se desarrollase en el mundo occidental. Contextualizamos la labor de Quimby dentro de su época y de la formación de los Estados Unidos como país y como economía capitalista. Explicamos las bases teóricas de su cura mental y el procedimiento conforme al cual transcurría la misma, indicando algunas semejanzas generales con formas de psicoterapia posteriores. Señalamos asimismo la semejanza entre el tipo de individualismo que la cura mental apuntalaba y el de la actual Psicología Positiva.

Between the years 2001 and 2003 the Materials and Structures Research Group grime, carried out te... more Between the years 2001 and 2003 the Materials and Structures Research Group grime, carried out technical inspections of the construction systems of the buildings that were declared national heritage in the Colombian Andean zone -many of them made with adobe-. Based on the results of this study, three adobe walls, representative of the religious buildings of the Andean region, were constructed and subjected to pseudo-dynamic cyclic loads parallel to their main plane. Based on the results of these tests the characteristics of the behaviour of the walls under cyclic loads applied in their main planes were established. Later, two retrofitted walls with steel tensors were constructed and subjected to loads parallel to their main plane. The retrofitting alternative improved the behaviour of the adobe walls maintaining the integrity of the wall.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in United States, and is associated with atrial... more Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in United States, and is associated with atrial fibrosis. Although the cause of atrial fibrosis development is not understood, its etiology is related to cardiac dysfunction, mitral regurgitation (MR), and coronary artery disease. This study focuses on determining the acute effects of myocardial infarction (MI) on left atrial (LA) function. Our hypothesis is that MI may result in changes in left ventricular relaxation, MR, and LA pressure and volume overload, leading to changes in LA geometry and mechanics, which will result in later atrial fibrosis. We studied the changes in LA size, ejection fraction, and the relative contributions of passive and active emptying, comparing controls with post-MI animals.

ABSTRACT The effect of foundation embedment on settlement calculation is a widely researched topi... more ABSTRACT The effect of foundation embedment on settlement calculation is a widely researched topic in which there is no scientific consensus regarding the magnitude of settlement reduction. In this paper, a non-linear three dimensional Finite Element analysis has been performed with the aim of evaluating the aforementioned effect. For this purpose, 1800 models were run considering different variables, such as the depth and dimensions of the foundation and the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the soil. The settlements from models with foundations at surface level and at depth were then compared and the relationship between them established. The statistical analysis of this data allowed two new expressions, with a mean maximum error of 1.80%, for the embedment influence factor of a foundation to be proposed and these to be compared with commonly used corrections. The proposed equations were validated by comparing the settlements calculated with the proposed influence factors and the true settlements measured in several real foundations. From the comprehensive study of all modelled cases, an improved approach, when compared to those proposed by other authors, for the calculation of the true elastic settlements of an embedded foundation is proposed.

Airborne pathogens are associated with the spread of infectious diseases and increased morbidity ... more Airborne pathogens are associated with the spread of infectious diseases and increased morbidity and mortality. Herein we present an emerging chemical free, nanotechnology-based method for airborne pathogen inactivation. This technique is based on transforming atmospheric water vapor into Engineered Water Nano-Structures (EWNS) via electrospray. The generated EWNS possess a unique set of physical, chemical, morphological and biological properties. Their average size is 25 nm and they contain reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. In addition, EWNS are highly electrically charged (10 electrons per particle on average). A link between their electric charge and the reduction of their evaporation rate was illustrated resulting in an extended lifetime (over an hour) at room conditions. Furthermore, it was clearly demonstrated that the EWNS have the ability to interact with and inactivate airborne bacteria. Finally, inhaled EWNS were found to have minimal toxicological effects, as illustrated in an acute in-vivo inhalation study using a mouse model. In conclusion, this novel, chemical free, nanotechnologybased method has the potential to be used in the battle against airborne infectious diseases. † The manuscript was written through contributions of all authors.
