Epidemiologic studies of polymyositis-dermatomyositis incidence in Spain are lacking. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence rates of dermatomyositis-polymyositis and their distribution in our country.Observational and descriptive study. Data was obtained from hospital discharge code (CMBD) during the period 1997-2004. Sex, region and age were analysed. Raw and standardized incidence rates for each region studied were calculated as new cases/million population/year with 95% confidence interval (CI). Trend odds ratio (OR) was calculated by means of a logistic regression.Global incidence rate in polymyositis-dermatomyositis was 8.9 new cases/million population/ year (CI 95%, 8.6-9.2); 3.9 (CI 95%, 3.7-4.1) for polymyositis and 4.9 (CI 95%, 4.7-5.2) for dermatomyositis. Rate differences between both diseases reached statistical significance (p < 0.001). Annual incidence rate decreased significantly across the period studied in both diseases with a trend OR of 0.95 (CI 95%, 0.93-0.97; p < 0.001) in dermatomyositis and 0.96 (CI 95%, 0.93-0.97; p < 0.001) in polymyositis. Both diseases were significantly more frequent in females (p < 0.001). The incidence rates for each region varies between 2.2 and 10.6 cases/million population/year in polymyositis and between 2.9 and 8.6 cases/million population/ year in dermatomyositis.Incidence of dermatomyositis-polymyositis in Spain is similar to other countries. Decreased incidence observed across the period and the higher incidence of dermatomyositis could be explained because of a better diagnosis of these entities.

Data collected in a cross-sectional community health study among adult Mexicans (n= 274) living in a low income neighborhood (colonia) in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, were examined. We tested the hypotheses that individuals who reported suffering chronic illnesses would also report higher rates of depression than healthy individuals; and having that two or more chronic illnesses further increased the risk of depression.

The ANC system is graphically designed using Lab VIEW and implemented on FPGA. NLMS algorithm is used for updating the filter co-efficients. The ANC system is evaluated on a realistic test-bed mimicking an actual fMRI bore. The algorithm is tested for various tonal frequencies in the range from 100 to 5000 Hz and the performance is measured in terms of the noise cancellation. We observe that good noise cancellation (15 to 45 dB SPL) can be obtained with NLMS algorithm over the entire bandwidth.

The array consists of 3 water Cherenkov detectors of 1:86 m 2 cross-section and 12 liquid scintillator detectors of 1 m 2 distributed in a square grid with a detector spacing of 20 m over an area of 4000 m 2 . We discuss the calibration and stability of the array for both sets of detectors and report on preliminary measurements and reconstruction of the lateral distributions for the electromagnetic (EM) and muonic components of extensive air showers. We also discuss how the hybrid character of the array can be used to measure mass composition of the primary cosmic rays by estimating the relative contents of muons with respect to the EM component of extensive air showers. This facility is also used to train students interested in the field of cosmic rays. r

It is not clear whether females migrate towards estuaries to hatch larvae, as reported for other congeneric shrimps. We tested whether females of M. acanthurus exhibit reproductive migrations. The population dynamics of this shrimp was studied in the Ribeira de Iguape River, Brazil. Four sites that differ in position with respect to the coast were sampled monthly during 2007. In M. acanthurus, reproduction was seasonal and reproductive intensity did not vary among study sites. Females brooding early and late embryos were found at all study sites during the reproductive season. No disappearance of reproductive females was observed at the study site located furthest away (,150 km) from the coast. Thus, reproductive females of M. acanthurus do not exhibit reproductive migrations towards estuaries to hatch larvae. Maturity in females was reached at smaller body sizes during the austral summer and spring compared with winter and autumn. Growth rate and body size was sex-specific; males grew slower but attained larger average and final body sizes than females. This information needs to be considered in assessing stocks and establishing sustainable management plans for M. acanthurus in Brazil.
