Research paper thumbnail of Validity of a measure of readiness to recover in Spanish adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa

Three measures-the ANSOCQ, the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)-were administered to a group of 70 anorexia nervosa patients (mean age = 15.6 yrs) who were receiving treatment at a specialized eating disorder unit and had reached different stages of the treatment programme. The ANSOCQ was administered again after one week in 42 patients to evaluate test-retest reliability. The ANSOCQ demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's a = .94) and one week test-retest reliability (r =.90). Negative, signi cant correlations were found between the ANSOCQ and several scales on the EDI-2 (r between ê .50 and ê .72) and the BDI (r = ê .68). The Spanish version of the ANSOCQ seems a reliable instrument to evaluate readiness to recover in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

They were all receiving treatment at a specialised Eating Disorder Unit and were at different points in the treatment programme. Admission during 6–9 month follow-up was recorded in 63 of these patients who had been admitted to the Unit. The other 7 patients were contacted by phone to determine if they had been hospitalised in another unit during the follow-up period. Results: Patients who needed hospital admission during follow-up had higher mean scores at first evaluation on some of the EDI-2 scales and on the BDI, lower ANSOCQ scores and were more likely to have been outpatients at first evaluation. In the logistic regression analysis a low ANSOCQ score and being an outpatient at first evaluation were shown to be independent predictors of hospitalisation during follow-up.Conclusions: Low motivation to change, depressive symptomatology and some EDI-2 scales are related to the necessity of hospital admission in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa.

Methods In the period 2001–2006, 138 patients with prior diagnostic excisional biopsy (96 non-palpable and 42 palpable breast cancer) and 328 without previous surgery (32 non-palpable; 296 palpable cancer) were treated. The combined technique (99mTc-colloidal rhenium and isosulfan blue dye) was the approach for sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection. Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) was completed only when the SLN was positive for metastasis or not located. Results Detection rate, if there was prior surgery, was 95% for non-palpable and 98% for palpable cancer, and 99% for one-time treatment group. Metastasis rate in the SLN was 15% in non-palpable cancer (14/91), significantly smaller than in palpable breast cancer (39% if prior surgery and 37% in one-time surgery). According to tumoral size, ALND metastasis rate was similar for T1 and T2 tumors (43–44%). In the follow-up of the groups with prior diagnostic biopsy or surgery of the breast cancer we have not found any false negative in the axilla. Conclusion The detection of the SLN is also feasible in patients with previous surgery of breast cancer. Because SLN metastasis rates are significantly smaller in non-palpable lesions, the effort in screening programs for early detection of breast cancer and also in improving histopathological confirmation of malignancy with ultrasound or stereotactic guided core biopsies must continue.

Eighteen primiparous cyclic heifers were hormonally synchronized and artificially inseminated. Nine of them, which were inseminated with semen containing 10 7 live N. caninum NC-1 isolate-tachyzoites, reacted with seroconversion and a specific IFN-g response. Moreover, N. caninum DNA was demonstrated by a nested-PCR in the blood of all nine heifers and in brain, lungs, liver and uterine horn of several of them. In contrast, nine heifers inseminated with tachyzoite-free semen developed no antibody or IFN-g responses, and no parasite DNA was detected in blood or organs. At necropsy, viable embryos were detected in one and six of the infected and non-infected heifers, respectively. No specific Neospora DNA was detected in any of the embryos. This study provides evidence that intrauterine inoculation via contaminated semen cause N. caninum infection in cattle. #
