Research paper thumbnail of TOXICITY AND REPELLENT ACTIVITY OF SPINOSAD AND ORANGE OIL AGAINST Rhizopertha dominica F. AND Tribolium castaneum (HERBST)

Journal of Plant Protection and Pathology, 2014

The lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica Fabricius and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castan... more The lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica Fabricius and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst, are of the most insect species which cause the highest grain damage. Many chemical insecticides related to different groups used as protectants to stored products presented serious problems to human health and environment. To avoid these disadvantages, laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluate two materials namely, plant oil (Orange oil) and bioinsecticide, spinosad as stored wheat grain protectants against T. castaneum and R. dominica using two bioassays technique, mixing with medium and repellency at different exposure periods (72 h for mixing with feeding medium and 24 h for repellency). Results obtained revealed that the two tested materials, orange oil and spinosad had moderately action on the two tested insects either by mixing with medium or by repellent bioassay methods. Data cleared that the effect of the tested materials increased with the increasing of concentration and period of exposure especially with mixing bioassay. For repellent effect, the highest level of concentration had the most action on both T. castaneum and R. dominica. Except orange oil against T. castaneum the effect of materials tested decreased through 24 h of exposure. Spinosad showed nearly similar effect on the two tested insects while R. dominica was found to be more tolerant than T. castaneum with orange oil. Finally, our findings suggest that spinosad and orange oil may to be potential protectants against R. dominica and T. castaneum in stored wheat grain principally with mixing bioassay technique.

Conventional methods for the surface treatment of dental ceramic materials are not capable of creating a smooth surface without microcracks. The special radiation characteristics of both XeCl excimer and CO 2 lasers make them suitable to treat ceramic surfaces in order to produce a glazed surface. The aim of this study was to investigate the surface hardness of dental ceramics after their glazing with both XeCl excimer and CO 2 lasers. Materials and methods: 70 specimens were prepared from both dental porcelain and In-Ceram Alumina (35 specimens each). In hardness test, 25 specimens of each ceramic material were divided into 5 specimens that were conventionally glazed, 10 specimens were excimer laser glazed with two different energy densities, and 10 specimens were glazed with CO 2 laser at two different power settings. The surface hardness was measured in (Kg/mm 2 ) using Vickers microhardness tester. In addition, SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis of the changes in surface structure were conducted. The results were analyzed and compared using one way ANOVA and LSD statistical tests at a level of significance of 0.05% (p < 0.05). Results: Statistical analysis of the results revealed insignificant increase in hardness values of 2 watt CO 2 laser and 1.5 Joule/cm 2 excimer laser glazed porcelain specimens. Also, there was insignificant increase in hardness values of 2 and 10 watt CO 2 laser glazed In-Ceram Alumina specimens. 10 watt CO 2 and 6.2 Joule/cm 2 excimer lasers glazed porcelain specimens demonstrated significant increase in their hardness values. In-Ceram Alumina specimens showed significant increase in their hardness values glazed with both energy densities of excimer laser. Scanning electron microscope images declared an increase in homogeneity and smoothness of the surfaces of laser glazed specimens especially those glazed with higher power setting of CO 2 laser and higher energy density of excimer laser when compared to conventionally glazed specimens. X-ray diffraction charts of both the control and laser glazed specimens are nearly identical, indicating that laser glazing had no effect on their internal microstructure and it was just a surface treatment. Conclusion: laser glazing improves surface hardness and smoothness of ceramic surfaces without affecting their internal structures.

Evidence for the multiplicity scaling of He-fragments is reported. The pseudo-rapidities for the shower particles accompanying the emission of the different multiplicities of the projectile He-fragments are also investigated. Each of these distributions is found to be satisfactorily fitted by a single Gaussian distribution. The temperature of the system emitting the shower particles T is also calculated and found to be independent of both the projectile and the multiplicities of the He-fragment.

The treatment is carried out within the framework of the post-Newtonian approximation. The primaries also are assumed to be radiant sources. The locations of the collinear points are computed. Series forms of these locations are obtained as new results.
