The methodology was based on inventories from mobile sources based on US EPA's technical report. Regarding air quality the following parameters were determined: PM10, PM2.5, CO, NOX, O3, SO2, HC and PAHs. The results showed a decrease for emissions PM, CO, and HC, and a slight increase for NOX. The characterization of atmospheric pollutants in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre showed that they are influenced by mobile sources, particularly diesel vehicles. The diagnosis of ratios analysis that was applied to facilitate the identification of sources of PAHs, indicated an influence of diesel oil.

Aerosol samples were collected at the studied locations between December 2000 and December 2001 during 24 h periods at 15 day intervals using HV PM10 and dichotomous samplers. Then, the values obtained with the ISCST (Industrial Source Complex Term) model, with the HV PM10 sampler at all studied stations, and with the dichotomous sampler at the 8 de Agosto station were compared with each other. The results show that the values for the model had been underestimated in relation to the HV PM10 data for the studied stations, but agreed with the values obtained with the dichotomous sampler.

Various nano-minerals play an important role in the mobilization of contaminants and their subsequent uptake by plants. We present a new analytical experimental approach in combination with an integrated analytical protocol designed to study basalt alteration processes. Recently, throughout the world, ultra-fine and nano-particles derived from basalt dust wastes (BDW) during "stonemeal" soil fertilizer application have been of great concern for their possible adverse effects on human health and environmental pollution. Samples of BDW utilized were obtained from companies in the Nova Prata mining district in southern Brazil for chemical characterization and nano-mineralogy investigation, using an integrated application of advanced characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution-Transmission Electron microscopy (HR-TEM)/Energy Dispersive Spectrosco...

The hierarchical cluster analysis results were used as start point for the nonhierarchical cluster analysis as an agglomerative technique. These particles were taken from two areas of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Charqueadas and Sapucaia do Sul., from may /97 to may/98, using a High Volume Sampler (Hi-Vol). Around 10,000 particles were analysed by Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy-Dispersive X-Ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS). The Hierarchical Cluster Analysis allowed the identification of five groups of particles, whose amounts were differentiated according to the summer and the winter campaigns. The abundance of each type of particles inside each group according to the different sections was verified by the Nonhierarchical Cluster Analysis, resulting in information about the emissions sources. The groups of particles of Si/Al and Si and of Fe/Zn and Fe for Charqueadas were more significant in section 2 and 3 (NW and W wind directions) and in section 1 (SE wind direction), evidencing the influence of the coal power plant and steel industry, respectively located in these quadrants. In Sapucaia do Sul the data were more heterogeneous, causing a certain difficulty to identify the source as anthropogenic. Nevertheless the group of particles containing Fe was found in sectors of NW/W wind directions which shows the influence of the steel plant.
